Minwax vs Bona or Dura Seal
Comments (1)Both, Great question. I too would like to know the differences between Minwax, Bona Kemi, and Duraseal. It seems like everyone wants to use Minwax in out area but they will use Bona or Dura Seal if we want....See Morewax wood floors vs poly?
Comments (4)In short, if you want a floor that's easier to touch up, doesn't look plastic, don't mind slipperiness and regular maintenance, get the wax. Wax is usually applied after two coats of sealer like the ones made by Dura Seal. If you want a floor that is less slippery, can be maintained easily and don't mind that it is hard to touch up if you get a scratch and needs to be recoated every 5 to 15 years, get poly. New generation hardwax oil finishes add a bit of durability over waxed floors but still need specialized maintenance products. Do a Google search and you're bound to find volumes of opinions on each type of finish....See MorePainting trim over Varathan finish
Comments (2)Rule of thumb, try to never paint over a shiny surface(of any kind) without doing some sort of prep. You have to break the surface sheen by either uniformly sanding with a light grit(220) or priming with a good sandable-type primer. I prefer to use Gripper primer on everything to provide uniformity and adhesion. Plus I ALWAYS prefer to prime vs. sanding (unless there is surface imperfections of some sort)mainly because of cleanliness(because you know that dust will somehow find it's way into your paint finish!!) Gripper is sold at Home Depot, by the way.. --Dave...See MorePainting vs. staining floor boards
Comments (5)Thanks for the quick responses. I was told the entire floor is stained, but I don't remember the color (maybe red oak?), but something other than clear. The planks that are now grey never had any stain or coat on them as far as I know. And, to be clear, I would never paint the entire floor, I was just thinking about painting and then faux graining those 7 planks. My thinking was that since no two planks on the floor are the same color, my faux grained planks could vary in color as well. Is hardwood floor finish different from Varathane gel stain? I just don’t have the money to pay someone to come in and do anything with the floors (I wouldn’t feel right asking a flooring person to come over and milk him for information knowing that there is no way that I would ever hire him). I don’t have low budget; I have zero budget. I can only afford what I can do by myself with a trip to Home Depot/Sherwin Williams. What negative results could I get from painting and faux graining the 7 planks? On the Ikea board it looks all right (the picture was just my first attempt; I’m getting better and better at it). Would the faux graining just look awful on the wood, so that it’s best to leave the grey mis-matched wood as it is? If the faux graining is a terrible idea, could staining just those planks ever work, or is there just too high a risk of blotchiness?...See Moredan1888
