Where do I get Covid-19 test kits? Gov? Ins reimburse?

About a month or so ago, we got some kits in the mail from (I guess) the government. Some ho hum brand. We have not use them because we don’t go any place and when we do we wear a masks and carry our ghost guns.

I asked my spouse to get more, but he doesn’t have time, he’s busy and he doesn’t listen to me anyway. I know that Deb-ab just got Covid and she had to test a bunch of times before she got a positive reading. So I don’t think this couple of tests that we have are going to be sufficient. Meanwhile our friends where we are scheduled to have Easter dinner were exposed to Covid and they are not sure if they are going to still have the dinner because they are waiting on continued testing. There are about a dozen or so people scheduled to be there including some children. So we can go or not. They are good cooks and I know they’ve gone to a lot of trouble but they surely do not want to infect anybody or spread this virus. They have asked us to test before coming if we plan to attend.

I can’t say that I have the strongest immune system going, and I’m not bragging. For various reasons I have a lot going on and I don’t get enough sleep. I’ve been waking up with my arms in pain and I think I might be sleeping in a way where some nerve around my cervical spine is being pinched or whatever I have no idea I think I need a neck transplant. And I’m excruciatingly exhausted in addition to having a few other distracting woes.

My spouse is one of those people who needs to be reminded 188 times or more. Not always proactive. I think he may be skipping a tad. I think of him as behaving like one of those economy model robotic vacuums — the type that isn’t programmable, but just takes rectilinear turns at random.

So, I am going to order more test kits, even at $50 to $200 a pop, not reimbursable?

I sort of want to go for Easter (I’m so tired I began to say “Thanksgiving“) but I don’t really want to mingle with a whole bunch of people unless I can be outside, but the temperature is only going be about 54 something degrees F.

Maybe I should roll the dice, but I’m already exhausted all the time, and in pain and I don’t know —- do I really want to get more short of breath? Didn’t TFG say it was all gonna be gone by Easter of 2020?

Anyone know where I can order reliable test kits? (Not from China.)

I just heard Jacob Ward* on CNN say a few interesting things. 1. That with the case of the woman patient in Northern California, 36 nurses had to be quarantined! That’s a lot of staff missing from duty. 2. That the travel ban is misdirected. (Could you guess that xemophobe Stephen Miller wrote Trump’s speech? “Foreign” Disease.” The Covid-19 virus is here in the US and elsewhere already already. We need to be able to plan & allocate resources. A few days ago, some expert said that one thing large scale testing for the Covid-19 virus does, is allow pretty good zeroing in on who’s got the virus, where they are. They (epidemiological detectives) can interview patients and use various paper, mobile phones and electronic tracking to help them figure out common trail and sources. (Cue up Forensic File music.) 4. One of the expert guests suggested, depending on how “hot” your area seems to be or likely will be, to postpone elective surgery to free up hospital beds. I guess my surgery is elective ;-/ but I am in significant discomfort/pain. I think it is a go home that day, but light general anesthesia or just put me in a coma. Small joint surgery. The US has tested only a few hundred and there is a backlog on getting the tests processed. South Korea has tested a few thousand individuals, and weeks ago. This question made me crazy early in the NYC infection, especially after I read the article in the nyt about the author's husband's battle with covid19. To get a test, she had to walk her husband to a testing venue, even though he was very sick; no subway, taxi, Uber was possible. I kept picturing my dd getting sick and knew there was nothing anyone could do to help her and that if she got very sick, she might not even be able to get an emt there in a timely manner. When I finally heard about the importance of testing a covid-positive patient's oxygen, I immediately ordered an oximeter for her and felt a lot better when she received it. I figured she could at least monitor that level if she did become sick, and know when to try to get an emt or walk to a hospital, if it came to that. In the early days, people couldn't tell when they were in trouble because they didn't feel like their oxygen levels were low until it was almost too late. Maybe I simplified things, but it brought me a little relief from the worry.

Carol, that’s the point—-there are different ways of testing for the gene and none involve preference. If one can detect very small amounts of a bitter compound (long chemical name usually abbreviated as PROP) on a test strip that is a positive result, also the ability to identify and compare intensity of the taste of that compound across different sample strips. The ability to taste other compounds also is part of the phenotype, or expression of the gene. Its not expressed in exactly the same way in all people who have it. Genetic testing is obviously the definitive determination. The person who identified this supertaster ability was a psychologist, not a geneticist. The science has come a long way in the past 20 to 30 years and many popular articles are still written based on the original research on (and ideas about) the subject.

I give thanks that I don't have all that hassle. We can get a supply of free test kits from any pharmacy, many pop up sites and also by mail so we always have some at home. If you feel rough you don’t need to leave the house to get tested and there’s no risk of spreading it about if you do have it. It does make life easier not having to go looking for and booking a test. We’re recommended to test 2x per week whether we feel unwell or not. Also if we’re going to any place where there might be crowds. There are 7 tests in each of these boxes.

There wasn't enough takers in the first round of government covid tests. So you can order 4 more for free.

Thank you functionthenlook. We have a huge expense coming up, so I may do that.

I wonder if those recently attending a conference in D.C. where many were infected were wearing masks. I’m going to guess that those infected were not.

It is my understanding that you can get the test kits at the pharmacy and it is covered by insurance. I believe if you use your insurance card, you will have no payment to make.

As far as not made in China, I got a set from the govt that was the brand- BINAX and that was made in Thailand and US so no China. I think insanely enough, that most are actually made in China.

I had no idea what a ghost gun either was but I'm very glad I didn't ask. :-)

Here in BC we were getting free test kits but I heard that they are not detecting omicron as well as t did Delta. We are supposed to swab in a certain order according to a study and we are supposed to swab more deeply.

A lot of pharmaceutical components are manufactured in China. A lot of cotton is from China. I was looking at flatwear — a lot made in China. Some made in Vietnam.

Which type of tests do people here prefer? spit in cup or swab up nose. I tried the PCR spit test a year ago. okay. Its seemed to take forever to get enough spit in that little cup. The sensation of swabbing up behind my nose doesn‘t sound like fun. ouch?

Call the health department in your county. I can get free masks and tests at the public libraries.

Thanks for that link, happy2b! I just ordered 2 more sets 🙂

Each address is limited to 2 orders, and we've reached our limit here, but my son never ordered his, so I used his address.

And you can also order test kits online at pharmacies like CVS and Walgreen's. Last time I did that they were around $25.

You are welcome. I think having tests on hand is a good idea. My county seems to have a glut of tests. At first they were very restrictive and secretive about giving them out, but now my library has had them on a table near the entrance for the last several weeks.

INteresting, will have to try again but I did not know about re-ordering on the website. I just went to do that and it said I had reached the limt. I only ordered once, about 2 months ago when it first came up. I might try again later, and I might just try at the pharmacy. I still have the original 8 so it's not critical.

Salnova - it started out that you could only get 4 tests (one order) and then at some point they started to allow you another order of 4. So if you got a total of 8 tests then you did get the maximum. Maybe they just sent you 2 orders the first time IDK.

Wow they must have alot unclaimed. Yinz can have all the ones I never ordered and don't want.

FWIW, Michael Osterholm was on the radio today and he said that the problem they've found with wearing masks is that unless it's either a N95 or KN95, there's not much protection, including the fact that approx. 1/3 of people wear a mask below their nose, which is completely useless.

Went swimming at a fitness club with my grandkids. There was a woman in the pool wearing a blue disposal mask with a scarf over it. Both were soaked through. Amazing how some people believe in the magical protection of masks worn in the most ridiculous manner. I see people in stores with their masks below their noses and constantly fidgeting with them. People on trails with sweat soaked masks. Zero common sense.
