Sealing an oak table

Kind of a long post, but I need help! I am refinishing a kitchen table made of oak. I have sanded it down to the raw wood and would like to keep it that way. I need to seal it with a sealer that is extremely durable( waterproof, scratch resistant, etc.). The run of the mill sealers at Lowe’s and Home Depot aren’t tough enough. I don’t want to change the color of the wood at all, which an oil base would do. I have spent hours of research on conversion varnish, acrylic, waxes, oils, and so many others. It seems like I need something on a conversion varnish level of durability, but I do not have an industrial spray room! Is there anything that I can do myself? I’m making myself crazy with all this research!

A brush on waterborne poly will be your current best DIY option. Yes, it will change the color of the wood, as all finishes do. Your limitations on tools and developed skills are going to limit your finish that which you can personally achieve. Adjust your expectations of the finish result to the tools that you are comfortable using. Or set this aside, buy more professional grade tools and materials, and then pick up more practice pieces to learn the tools and materials. Then revisit this project in about 6 months time.

I refinished a wood table in 2014, with water-based poly, as Tanisha Covey suggested. I would guess I applied at least 3 thin coats (I can't remember exactly after this many years). It held up beautifully - it's the only table we have, so it was used for 3 meals a day. Of course we always used trivets under hot things, and wiped up spills immediately, but the finish didn't show any signs of wear.

Floors look great! We did the same thing - 2 coats of bona nordic sealer on red oak…thinking I can see pink come through. Does anyone know if you can apply 3rd coat of nordic or even bona natural? Different light and angles show more pink than others.

How are you liking the elandura so far? I’m trying to see if anyone has had the same problem with the floor that I am currently having. I had it installed throughout my entire house a little over a year ago. The salesman really sold me on the pvc free aspect. There were no reviews that I could find as I believe it was a new product at the time. However, if I could go back in time, I would have never installed these floors. The product (well what I received) is defective. I am waiting on response from customer service. Let me know if you have had any issues.

Water base finishes will cause raised grains. A really good sanding will give you the least amount of texture. Sanding to 150 grit and buffing with 220 grit. Sandings need to be thorough for good results. Clean new applicators for each coats.
