Throw some gray in there. Every single person on the planet who is remodeling their kitchen is doing it.

It will look cold and boring unless you bring in some warmth or color. See Diana Bier's photos above -- there are other non-white fixed elements in the mix that keep them from looking like a hospital room.

Another factor to consider if you are installing an island is to make the island color or counter top different than the perimeter cabinets. Using wood on the island, either as a base or top, would add some interest.

It was challenging for us! We stayed with warm white for cabinets and countertops with a mixed white tile backsplash in gloss, lighter wood look LVP (durability choice) and walnut wood stained island. Incorporated warm gold hardware and fixtures with additional mixed metal look with SS appliances.

Looks really good.

I want white cabinets, with a white quartz countertop with little to no veining. Tile backsplash I want (like in photo is Cloe) I just don't know what paint and quartz to pick. Do not want it to clash.

Diana’s advice is on point. I am in the middle of trying to find a white quartz countertop to match my cabinets and it is so hard. There are so many different variations of white, some creamy, some cooler, etc and then finding something in stock is a whole process of its own. I know there are plenty of folks that think white kitchens are over done and boring, but I have always loved a white kitchen and will just add warm via furnishings, plants & decorations.

@Stephanie what brand white cabinets did you go with? Really struggling to decide on the cabinets vendor. Thanks for your help.

@Stephanie can you please give more details about your countertops? I like the minimal veining and it's not too busy.

@Stephanie . I'm doing my kitchen right now and it looks like we have very similar taste. What tile did you use? Is it Wellfleet coconut? All the whites are definitely challenging!

Diana's answer is spot on. You could also do a colorful or patterned backsplash to liven up the space.

These fabulous, spacious kitchens have beautiful architectural elements that most ordinary homes lack. These are such stunning features yet impossible to incorporate in a smaller sized kitchen in a home built in the last 50 years. For example, we cannot install wooden beams or an expansive range hood in my kitchen without removing two or three walls and even if we could, there are those 8 foot ceilings to consider.

How I love those kitchens with brick! Gorgeous pictures, great discussion!

@cupofkindnessgw don't get discouraged! I think it is possible to create a small kitchen with organic elements (wood, brick, stone), you just need to get creative and think out of the white box.

For example, you can have white cabinets with butcher block countertops, a brick floor or backsplash, woven wood or bamboo window treatments. None of these necessitate a large kitchen.

I don't mean to sound discouraged or ungrateful for all of the advice and inspiration I've received here on Houzz (member of the Garden Web for 20 years), I am delighted to renovate our kitchen even though it might not be a magazine-worthy end result. Since I love white, I don't need to veer to far out of that box to be very happy with my new kitchen. Yes to wood! I've already decide that some sort of wood window treatments are in order. Just waiting on the new floor to determine the right tone. Thanks again, Diana, you are so helpful to all of us!

What flooring have you chosen? A warm wood floor would work wonders for white cabinets and counter tops. I know you mentioned a white backsplash, but I'd do something special, maybe something colorful and handmade. If you have a small kitchen, you won't need a lot of tile, so you can get something with a higher price per square foot and it won't break the budget. If you don't want to add color, then get a b/s tile with some sort of texture--a crackle, undulating or relief finish, and an accent tile. Also consider glazed thin brick tiles--they have a beautiful texture and come in white and other colors.

Diana, here are my choices so far.

Kitchen floor and living room, dining, entry, halls: Karastan Belleluxe engineered hardwood: Pashima finish. There is a beautiful gray in this wood that might not be visible in these pictures. I'm obsessed with this floor. Specs: 3/4" oak, seven inch planks (maybe 7-1/2").

Fake slate porcelain tile by Daltile in black for the adjacent family room where the dogs live, and laundry room, wet bar area.

Our number one choice for quartz: Arizon Tile Silver Stallion

Our current top choice for backsplash tile: 2-1/2 by 9-3/4 Arizona Tile in Pearl (very pale gray).

Floor, Pearl Concerto Tile at the top, Silver Stallion quartz sample, Concerto tile in White.

Flooring is locked and loaded, delivery is the end of this week or early next week. Cabinets arrive next Monday.

I love all your choices, @cupofkindness! The floor is gorgeous, very neutral without being drab gray, still looks like vibrant wood. Question--is there a bevel on the edges?

The counter top looks very neutral as well. I do see some veining and I hope you won't be upset if the veining doesn't match perfectly at the corners and seams. Make sure you work out the placement with the fabricator before they cut it. They should template it for you. Keep in mind that it's difficult to bookmatch quartz. I actually dislike bookmatched stone, but you should be aware of the issues before the cuts are made.

Now, the tile selection is not bad, it's just not very interesting--it's the safe choice. I'd wait until everything is in before deciding on the backsplash. As i mentioned previously, you have a small kitchen, which could benefit from a more patterned/textured/colorful backsplash. But that's your decision. You can't go wrong with any of your selections. It's going to be beautiful!

@Diana Bier Interiors, LLC Appreciate your reply! The floor is a Karastan product, 3/4 inch engineered wood 3-4mm wear layer, no shine and the edges have the slightest bevel, if any. I had hoped for walnut but the selection of finishes and even brands, is limited in the 3/4" range. Those pictures were taken outdoors on a sunny day. I really love this floor, I'm praying I will feel the love after it's down.

The quartz will not be bookmarked but because we have a corner (angled) sink installation, seams will be tricky. We might go with a quieter quartz to avoid the dreaded vein clash. We are trying to purchase just one slab.

I know the tile is simple, but I don't mind that. If you look at my idea books you will see that I like a traditional look that seemed popular 10 years ago and nearly all have plain white subway tile. I'm not an early adaptor of any trend. Knobs and faucets, and lights will be polished nickel. Thanks again!

Two of the quartz patterns I love are Caeserstone London Gray and Silestone Lagoon. Neither have veining, but do have a marble look. You might consider them.

We had the same challenge. We ended up picking out a weathered white cabinet that had hints of gray in it and it all blends well.
