White Antique kitchen cabinets -- backsplash too white?

Our new kitchen cabinets are antique white which makes them off-white. I have two granites, the one that is on the exterior with the upper cabinets is a black leathered. (The island is alaskan white). I have picked out a backsplash to go with them but am concerned that it might make my cabinets look yellowish. (which I don't want). I also want to go more traditional versus modern, which is why I like the original whiter tiles.
My designer thinks that we could either go with a multi-colored backsplash or put a more neutral grout on the original ones I picked out.
Does anyone have any experience with this? This picture is not great as you will see, but it might give you an idea. My preference is the tile on the left. Thank you for any thoughts you give....

Comments (14)Hi eam44, I've looked at hundreds upon hundreds of white kitchen cabinets. And very few of them have non-white backsplashes. So, I guess I was hoping to find some inspiration images through this post. We are building our home, so we have to pick our options or upgrade to options not provided by the builder. I don't want to spend a lot on tiles b/c we've pretty much upgraded everything else in the kitchen and just want the tiles to accent, but not stand out, so as to not compete against our 90" x 60" walnut island countertop. Comments (9)My first project with glass tile involved my removing two columns of mortared mosaic glass squares because I didn't like the angle of my tile cuts. In the process of pulling it down I cut myself (no big surprise). What was a bit of a surprise was the surgery I needed two months later to remove a shard of glass lodged on the tendon of the middle finger of my right hand. It could have severed that tendon at any time, which would, of course, have been disastrous. He needs a wet saw, a diamond blade for it, personal protective equipment (I wore goggles, boots, gloves, but my gloves weren't leather) and health insurance! Regarding the tile, seeing all the samples together, Tusk has the right undertones, and would be my choice. You can choose anything you like, of course, but I don't think Gardenia is the right one. I am partial to the glazed thin brick and show it below in Alcatraz and Glacier. I totally get it if you feel you already have enough brick! Comments (6)Thanks mdl. I will toy around with this idea. I like light and bright, but we do have plenty of that in this kitchen already, plus a huge wall of windows. Our whole house is warm neutrals, and that is what is challenging me here. I agree that the white and the blue both look too cool. And thanks designsavy. I was on a mission to get it all done ASAP as we are using a contractor and are doing many rooms in a remodel, and the dust is getting to me, but we have just rearranged the sequence of things, and will now be doing kitchen, laundry, then master bath, so there should be time once the cabs and countertop are installed. Comments (19)After more thought, the 4x12 is going to look weird. It will only be 4 tiles high behind the main counter. And the long stretch under the bar is only 5.5 inches tall so it will have one tile and a sliver of a tile under the bar. I really wish I could find something that is 2.5x6, 3x8, 3x10 in a color similar to the MSI Dove Gray. The MSI Dove Gray has a silvery tone to it that goes best with the Colonial White granite counters. I found a 2x10 tile that is gray (SOCI Crafted Brick Gray which is apparently new). I like the size, the crackle finish, and the uneven handcrafted look to it but the gray is more of a putty color. It doesn't have the silvery color that the Dove Gray has. The SOCI Crafted Brick Gray is apparently new so I can't find any pictures or displays at showrooms of it up on a wall to see how it looks installed. But, the Colonial White granite has some silver shimmer scattered throughout it that I think goes better with the Dove Gray. So, does anyone know of a silvery gray tile in a 2x6-10 or 2.5x6-10 or 3x8-10?? Something other than the 3x6 size that is everywhere. A little bit shorter and wider than the standard 3x6. I like the elongated hex/pickets, but turned upwards. are those a calacatta marble? usually that type has more warmer white tones than the carrrara.this is it in a beveled subway, but they have it in pickets too
you could also look at the white onyx. it has a lot of warm white tones.
this is a ivory travertine and might work it you like the bar look.
or, since you have black counters,,,,black and white marble

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoThis is the kitchen of the house we recently moved into. Cabinets are probably more ivory than antique white. Backsplash is a white textured, elongated subway with tan/greige grout. Are these the finish choices I would have made if picking? Probably not, but it's also not something that phases me enough to think about when I walk in the kitchen. I should mention, only my island pendants were on for This pic, so it looks more yellow than it really is.
I really like the Calcutta marble sample above--- or else your carrera option would work too with good lighting.

6 years agoI would keep it simple with a off white subway. the pattern in your granite is busy and I wouldn't introduce another pattern with it. you can mix patterns with fabric, but hard surfaces is best to leave at 1. in my opinion.

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agooh,ok then. I stand by my tile choices. no need to do a solid tile against a solid countertop. I wouldn't do something as busy as the multi colored glass bars, but I think it's fine to do black/white or a larger tile shape.
here is a pic of those glass bars (these are more muted) you like against the Alaska
if you wanted those glass bars, then pick a solid color that goes w/your scheme
you could do a solid black w/contrasting grout against the black countertops
