What backsplash with Colonial White granite counters & white cabinets?
Just installed Colonial White granite counters in the kitchen and can't decide on what backsplash would look best. Cabinets are white. Getting new floors but color undecided (possibly 5 inch dark hand-scraped wood). Home is traditional. Counter is long with a window behind the sink.
For the backsplash, we have looked at:
-MSI Dove Gray subway tile which comes in 3x6 or 4x12 and has a crackle finish
-Retro Fumo 3x12 which has an uneven surface and uneven edges

Comments (17)FYI, here are some of my inspiration photos. I love the red accents in this first one (my compliments to SoonerMagic--I hope it's OK that I'm re-posting this) but I'm just not sure if white subway tile might be too stark in our kitchen. Our cabs are white rather than off-white, there's no window above the sink and there won't be much painted wall showing. If we went with this color scheme we'd probably do something like BM Bennington Gray on the walls. Not certain if we'd use the contrasting grout or go with something whiter. I like how the beige-y backsplash in this 2nd photo adds a little more color to the room. Was thinking a subway tile in this shade might still work nicely with red accents (with paint in a similar beige shade): A third option would be to do a grayish paint (BM Gray Owl?) and go with a subway tile in carrara marble something like the one below (sorry--I'm not sure whose pic this is). The problem is I'm not sure that would coordinate well with the red in our dining room. It's also a cooler color scheme than I'd originally planned. Any thoughts? Comments (7)Hmm. I really like the glass on the right with the granite and cabinets. It's the marble that needs to go. I agree with RMS that if you keep the marble, stick with the one shape, and the shape that goes with the accent. I don't suppose you could get that accent tile in just the light shade and use that as the field tile with the accent running through the middle could you? Yes, it's safe, but I live in a one-bedroom apartment in NYC and don't plan on being there more than three more years, so I want to appeal to myself and as many other people as possible. Comments (25)White subway tile or just paint. None of the stone look tile go with the counter. As a buyer I'd rather have to tile a backsplash than rip out a backsplash and then tile it! Discordant/jarring/glaring backsplashes are one of my biggest turnoffs. I think it's the area where most people make a mistake in their renovations... so many people want to add "interest." Most places need less interest, not more. On the other hand, lighting is crucial. Would far rather someone put in the necessary lighting and just paint the backsplash. But that's me! 5 years agoAfter more thought, the 4x12 is going to look weird. It will only be 4 tiles high behind the main counter. And the long stretch under the bar is only 5.5 inches tall so it will have one tile and a sliver of a tile under the bar.
I really wish I could find something that is 2.5x6, 3x8, 3x10 in a color similar to the MSI Dove Gray. The MSI Dove Gray has a silvery tone to it that goes best with the Colonial White granite counters.
I found a 2x10 tile that is gray (SOCI Crafted Brick Gray which is apparently new). I like the size, the crackle finish, and the uneven handcrafted look to it but the gray is more of a putty color. It doesn't have the silvery color that the Dove Gray has. The SOCI Crafted Brick Gray is apparently new so I can't find any pictures or displays at showrooms of it up on a wall to see how it looks installed. But, the Colonial White granite has some silver shimmer scattered throughout it that I think goes better with the Dove Gray.
So, does anyone know of a silvery gray tile in a 2x6-10 or 2.5x6-10 or 3x8-10??
Something other than the 3x6 size that is everywhere. A little bit shorter and wider than the standard 3x6.

4 years agoChristy, I never did see pictures of the gray tiles with Colonial White. We tried a bunch of grays but ultimately went with white subway and gray grout (Warm Gray). Not sure if you are interested in white, but here are some pics. My kitchen is tiny and there is glare in the photos— sorry! We love the granite so much!
