Project is completed, no thanks to Snapper or other dealers. Yes, it can be done, but you will be pretty much on your own as far as selecting the proper replacement engine.

Engines for their equipment has to be bought through service dealers for the equipment. I don't know that you will find the list unless you are a Honda power equipment dealer. There are some engine such as used in the little EU generaters that only have parts. These engines are tied to the gen side in a pretty much a dedicated manner but engines that can be removed as a complete unit independent of the rest of the equipment are available. As suggested, the old tiller engine was probably a flathead and those are dead as well as some older OHV's.

Thanks for all the feedback. I did contact the Tulsa Engine folks for advice and Matt said the 331877 could be a direct replacement for my current (dead) 311777. I looked at the IPL's for both engines (311700 vs. 331800) and some PN's are the same, others are different. The main parts (sump, head, crank, flywheel, rod, piston, cam, valves) are all different which makes me nervous. Others (starter, magneto, fuel pump, alternator, regulator, wiring harness) are the same so maybe it is okay. Regardless, I think I'll still call Tulsa and talk via phone vs. just email so I can get more feedback. Again, at the end of the day, if the crankshaft size is the same and the bolt pattern is the same, I want to take advantage of the bigger HP unit if possible. I want to make sure too that I get the right engine. Any more advice to share is appreciated. Again, thanks for taking your time to help me out.
