A basement can be a great extension of your living space. If your home has an unfinished basement, there are myriad ways to turn it into a productive space, whether a crash pad for visitors, a place to work out or simply a useful and neatly organized storage space.
But we’ve discovered that the whole idea of basements can be polarizing. Some people love basements as cozy curling-up spots, while others find them downright creepy. Have you made a family entertainment hub? Kal Wallner turned his unfinished basement into a home brewery, complete with a mini pub and a home theater. This basement even has a sauna. The project was pricey — north of $100,000 — but Wallner says the family uses it all the time.

Is your basement where you rock on? One great thing about basements is that they’re below the rest of the house, meaning acoustically separate. These homeowners took advantage of that separation and turned their basement into a family jam room.
