I just bought a banana tree/plant, can I expect banana's?
Comments (2)As was said, depends upon the kind you have. (Some are ornamental, only.) When I lived in Long Beach, CA, my bananas took on average 15 to 18 months to bear. The warmer the climate, the shorter the time. If it's really consistently warm, can be as little as 9 months....See MoreWhat Bananas can I try for my zone?

Comments (4)You are referring to what is called mulch, cedar or pine bark mulches to be exact. It doesn't matter what colour works best, choose the colour you'd prefer. Mulch works to maintain moisture, keep temperatures steady and also to suppress weeds. you'll have to use aged wood chips to do this otherwise fresh ones can rob the ground of nitrogen which is detrimental to plants. However mulches (whether wood or stones) will not be able to suppress weeds for too long. It can kill weeds beneath it and prevent weed seeds from growing, but it cannot prevent new weed seeds from growing on top of it. The way to tackle any new growth is simply to disturb mulch with a rake or hoe when the weeds are young and usually this is enough to kill off new weeds. - but to make a point on how persistent weeds can be, a dandelion for example will find a way to grow in aspalt. The way to apply the mulch is to put down weed cloth which is usually black and then top with the mulch. Don't use a poly sheet which is shiny and not porous. You can get weed cloths at hardware stores. Weed cloths need to be porous so the plant can still receive water. Eventually though weed cloths can deteriorate and require replacement. Hope this helps.....See MoreBanana chips sticking together while conditioning
Comments (1)1. Only use solid yellow or slightly brown flecked bananas. Save overly-ripe bananas for fruit leather. Did you dip them in anything - lemon juice, lemon juice and honey mixture, flavored gelatin powder? As with all foods I dehydrate, I dip them in a citric acid water bath (or ascorbic acid - or a mixture of the two like Fruit Fresh) to help prevent bacteria growth, add some vitamin C, and help prevent them from browning (oxidizing). 2. They should be slightly pliable to crisp when done. The less ripe a banana is, the easier it is to dehydrate until it is crisp due to less developed sugars than fully- or over-ripe bananas. Did you manage to peel them off the tray and flip the banana slices after 4-5 hours of dehydrating? Although that's a mess to do, it does help with the drying process. 3. Due to the high moisture content, and depending on the sugar content of the bananas, they will tend to stick together after they are dried if they were leathery and pliable when you removed them from the dehydrator due to the natural sugars being concentrated. I suggest refrigerating them and using quickly as a snack food. You can also cover dehydrated banana slices with boiling water and rehydrate them (soak 1-2 hour). A cup of dehydrated bananas, refreshed, will equal about 3/4 c. mashed bananas. If you notice any mold developing, throw the entire contents of the container away. Once mold has developed, there are spores present throughout the container of food, not just the visible mold, so always toss the entire contents of the container of dehydrated food that shows any sign of mold. I don't dehydrate bananas very often because they don't keep well. I prefer storing and using #10 cans of Honeyville Farms Dehydrated Banana Chips, which are crispy dry and lightly sweet, and keep better and longer than home-dehydrated bananas. -Grainlady...See More- 3 years ago
