Help updating master bath! Heating? Towel Warmer?, Tub, etc!
We are planning a master bath renovation but want to keep costs down. We are empty nesters and resale is important in case we move in 5 years or so. Here are my questions:
1. Heating: Bathroom is currently heated by toe-kick heaters under the vanity. They do a great job of heating but I can't store toiletries in the cabinet because all the products get really hot. What makes the most sense for heating the room, considering both cost and comfort? Are electric underfloor heating mats a good investment? Will they heat the room? Room is 12' x 11' with 10' high ceilings. Is there a brand that you like? Would installing a towel warmer be a good idea to heat the room? Electric or hydronic?
2. Vanity: I need a 72" vanity. I like a transitional leaning towards contemporary look. Any recommendations on a quality vanity that isn't going to break the bank? I love the idea of deep drawers to hold tall hair spray cans etc and hair dryer. If not all drawers, then cabinets with pull-outs. Was hoping to get a dark wood vanity with white quartz top. Outlets in vanity a plus. Is Bertch a good brand? How about Vanico?
3. Tub: I love the look of a freestanding tub but I've been known to slip and fall. I read that getting an undermount tub with a deck surround may be a smarter safer option for those prone to falling and also lets you age in place a little longer. Thoughts? It does seem like being able to sit down and swing your legs over is safer. I read in much older posts that the Kohler Underscore was a good choice for an undermount. These were old posts here so I don't know if there is something better. Please advise.
4. Toilet: We currently have a toilet and a bidet. Was thinking of getting rid of the bidet and maybe getting a Toto toilet and later adding a washlet. Thoughts? Is the Toto Ultramax II recommended these days? I saw that in posts that were several years old.
5. Medicine Cabinets: Any specific ones that are recommended?

2 years agoThis is a lot of information without seeing a floorplan or photos. The Kohler Underscore tub is a good one; I just put in a tub/shower in a client's guest bath using that model with a glass slider door.

If there's room for a separate shower, you could do a configuration in which the undermount tub deck extends into the adjacent shower to form a bench. Like this:

As for the heating, check with your contractor to find out how difficult it would be to move the ducting to the floor or the adjacent wall near the floor. I'm betting it's not that difficult or expensive. As for 72" vanities, those are going to be pretty expensive no matter how you slice it. Take a look at Pottery Barn and/or Waterworks.

Do we really need a towel warmer?
Comments (8)I'm in Seattle. I have Runtal towel warmers in all of my bathrooms. Aside from the delightful luxury of having a warm towel when you step out of a tub or shower, you'll never have musty smelling towels again. In our climate, I think a towel warmer is almost a necessity. I use it the year-round, although I do lower the temperature setting in the warmer months. My towel warmers are on automatic timer and temperature controllers. They come on in the morning automatically, then turn off during the hours when they're not needed (I can override the setting if my usual schedule isn't adhered to). They are simply wonderful. It's amazing how quickly you get spoiled. When I'm away and have to dry off with an unwarmed towel, I really miss it. Mine are the Runtal electric Neptune models. I highly recommend them. Comments (27)Well, phooey. I taped it out in the bathroom with blue tape last night and it looked like it would fit, but with too many nos, I'm back to the drawing board. Interesting thought, Vix. Right now we don't actually have a toilet room, so much as a separate toilet "area" (there's no door, and the closet takes up too much room to add a door), but it's on my agenda to create one. In our house, it's very necessary. I generally use that bathroom to try to FIND privacy, only to have 3 people (and sometimes the dog) follow me into the bathroom. I'm looking forward to having a door that locks and a fan so that I don't have two little people handing me the TP and asking whether I'm doing number 1 or 2 (oh, and the 1 year old likes to flush while I'm ON the pot; so I've got my own special cold water washlet), while DH decides that he absolutely has to shave and brush his teeth at that exact moment. Now if I take a hike to the guest bath on the other side of the house, all three just follow me AGAIN. Sometimes when I have insisted on locking the door in the guest bath (no way to do that with our LOUVERED -- why??? -- pocket door in the master), my one year old plopped down prostrate outside the door and cried until I open the door. For my W/C, I want to put in a LOUD fan; no whisper quiet for me. Maybe I'll even add a radio. :) The way I'm seeing it, I can either get rid of the long vanity altogether and live with a fairly small vanity, plus a tub and shower, I can skip the tub and live with the kids' bathroom on the third level as the only room with a tub, or we can bump out that weird corner jog, which would give us an additional 49'' X 27'' space -- enough to fit a 5X3 tub, 5X3 shower and keep the two vanities. But that sounds very expensive and will require carefully removing and replacing the siding to match the existing. Comments (6)I've had two different freestanding towel warmers that I wound up getting rid of. They didn't heat the towels well enough. I have a Dacor warming drawer that can be used as a warming drawer in a bathroom, but it takes too long to heat up for me to want to use one in a bathroom. DH and I were gifted a Brookstone towel warmer that looks like an overgrown trash container with a lid. We tested it today and it heats quickly. We don't have an ideal spot for it due to our outlet locations, but I may try heating it, then unplugging it and moving it closer. The walls seem thick enough that I bet it will stay warm. At least that's an option if you don't have an ideal spot. I'd prefer something built-in or out of sight, but if this works better than anything we've tried and is cheaper, I might design a clever nook or cabinet that allows it to be slid out when in use and tucked away when not.
