I Think I Picked the Backsplash - How High Should it Go?
Comments (21)Check the return policy at the tile store. they'll usually take back complete boxes, especially if you set it up at the time of sale. Better to get them all at once and know that they match. Though you really should open all boxes to check that there isn't color variation that needs to be mixed in. Don't count on tiles from two shipments matching!! Even such not so colored glass. You've been having a trend, late in the game, to cluttering up that wall. I have to believe it's for a reason. Is it because you really want a burst of color and pattern? Or is it because you've been living so long with the white blankness of it all? And the white, blankness of all that snow! I think with the tile all the way up, and the variations in the tile, the small format, and the grout, there's going to be a heck of a lot of texture and interest and sparkle on that wall. Rather than cluttering up the wall, I'd suggest laying in a supply of interesting window shades that you can change with the season. You can put bright brocades up in the winter, and cool bamboo in the summer. Blonde lace in the spring and earth tone herringbone in the Fall....See MoreNo backsplash...should I add 4' granite bs?
Comments (3)What is your household like and what is your cooking style? I would want something to protect the wall behind the sink, at least. However, I believe that piece of granite, or whatever, is there as much to cover an uneven joint, as molding is in the rest of the house, as it is to protect the wall. It is rare to get a perfectly straight wall and a perfectly lined up piece of stone. You will have new build so you may have better control of that. The good news is that the backsplash is the last thing to be installed. So you can go ahead without it and see how it works for you. You shouldn't have trouble getting additional AB granite if you decide you want it....See MoreBacksplash? No backsplash? What kind of backsplash?
Comments (25)didn't have time to read all the answers. I have no backsplash and have never regretted it...been over 6 yrs. It is painted with BM matte...which has ceramic in it. It is as beautiful now as it was when first painted. I love the fact that I can showcase other things ...art etc in my kitchen and no competition. Also if I ever want to change it is as quick as a paint brush...expense is minimal..paint only ! All in all I think it is serene as you point out . Here is one pick. Since I have a lot of high heat cooking in my kitchen..built in deep fat fryer as well as gas cook top I can definitely speak to the longevity of paint only. c ( more at this album )...See MoreTumbled Stone kitchen backsplashes, should I or shouldn't I?
Comments (24)We've only had the granite for a couple months but we totally love the look of it! We had a slab picked out that had a lot of greyish areas along with the caramel and cream swirls and we thought we really loved it. But when they went to cut it, they noticed a number of scratches in areas that made it un-useable. So they asked us to come and select another slab. The longest run in our kitchen is 9 ft. and they had two smaller slabs that they couldn't use for some of the large kitchens. So they showed them to us and it was love at first sight. The scratches in the other slab were meant to be! It is more overall black with lovely streaks and swirls and we are so glad we had a chance to choose it. But... I was told by many people and did lots of research on the web, that this granite is particularly dense and durable. And that dark granite is more durable than light. But early on I managed to make a tiny scratch in it. I had a ceramic urn as a kitchen catcher. It was glazed except for the bottom which was a rough grainy texture. I was going to put a protective base on it and hadn't yet. When I slid it on the counter I could feel it scratching. I used a bit of black felt pen and even I can't find the scratch anymore. But it was an eye opener! Maybe this is normal. I don't know since its the first granite we have had. But we sure love the look of it....See Morenjmomma
