HELP! Find casual dining table to complement vintage mahogany cabinet

We sold our house and are moving into a brand new condo - white kitchen cabinets, quartz “copper mist” countertop, cathedral ceiling - very different from our 1980’s style colonial. I’m looking for a new dining table & chairs (preferably round, w/room for 6 chairs) with a more casual look, that will complement my grandmother’s 75 year old mahogany china cabinet. The pictures below show:

China cabinet (no longer have the old table, and don’t want that same style)
Living room furniture (couch, love seat, 2 end tables, round coffee table) - no longer have the rug, and will be looking for something lighter.
Kitchen cabinetry, recently installed
The kitchen flows into the dining / living area. There is a gas fireplace on the right hand side

One question I have: would you do a two-tone table to or a lighter wood? I haven’t seen anything in any of the local furniture stores - does anyone have any suggestions??

Painted would make it more casual, but could still have a traditional flair.

Sweetbean I just went through this in our small 11'x11' DR that was largely over furnished with a lot of "this n that" - part of our entire home reno was out with it ALL! Yea DR set, 2 sideboards - one that matched the set, on that was a beast & did not - a PIANO , a beautiful built in I searched, searched , searched - DON"T give up - You will find a table/chairs I scoured all ads, and Craigslist - what I found were LOTS of DR Sets - I'm close to NYC and found people giving high quality sets away - I think people are moving away from formal DRs blowing kitchens into DRs So my advice is don't settle - live without and enjoy the hunt I did. I found a Duncan Phyfe Mahogany set which is really what I wanted - our house dutch col 1930 so it suited the home as well as the small scale of our DR - it was dirty, dirty dirty - I'm still working on cleaning waxing -It is really well made & found incredible fabrics on ebay that were really reasonable - so they will get a big face lift. The owners were asking $2,200 for the set - DR table, 4 side chairs, 2 arms - mirror ,sideboard, and tall china cab I didn't want the china cab (we have lovely built in) got them to $1300 Dh thought i was crazy - wait til he sees it in DR Here is a pic in the prior owners DR In my almost completed DR chair w/proposed fabric sitting on it Guess I wanted to inspire you - I know the furnishings aren't your choice but to illustrate they are out there - get on a mission Link to craigslist good luck eileen Here is a link that might be useful: Craigslist

ow! Marie, that hurts just to read it. After too much viewing, I am sure I do not want either stark white or a painted top I do like a wood top see what I mean by the leaf side looking funny/incomplete on some? but again, not the stark white bottom. So more like this But in a clearer, more playful color tone like these pieces. Somewhere light blue to green to soft gray And the more tables I look at, the more lucky I feel that the lines on mine are so lovely. I prefer mine to any of those above, especially because of the detailing and the unique oval size. Price was nice too, since the whole set was way less than just one chair on these sites. Good to get the vision clearer. Better not screw this up, cause I don't think I'd ever find another set like it!

mtnfever- thanks! Do you think that look goes better with my kitchen/DR than the Tarvine? I know the Tarvine is more fancy but think it could work anyway. I do like the simplicity of the Toscana. I wish I could see the top of it better. The Pottery Barn Frances has a plank look and looks like crumbs would get stuck in between. Also, what are all of your thoughts on doing a bench like mtnfever shows above? Actually I like the idea. I know some don't like them for getting in and out and agree that on the other side of the table the banquette bench will be a little more an issue for that. However, for this type of bench people usually just "lift a leg" and get out with out sliding down. Of course, I guess you lose the comfortability of having a chair with a back on it.. Then again, Not too often do people lean back on them during eating.... I guess more during before and after dinner conversation. A plus is that they are sometimes less $ than getting separate chairs. Christine, My fabric is not great, I think, for the banquette seat b/c it's a light fabric (in color and weight)... however maybe for some pillows. For The window seat in the same room I may use the bird fabric for the seat or again for some pillows. Maybe I could use it for a table runner : )

You could use some of that eyelet fabric over the mirrors on the 2 center quadrants from top to bottom and let the far left and far right mirrors unveiled. They make something called ticky tack, that teachers use to hold posters and things on walls(no nails). I wonder if that wouldn't work on your favorite eyelet pattern?, and not damage the wood/fabric/mirrors? A friend took pieces of an old heirloom lace piece and did that in her miniature curio cabinet she inherited over the back mirror lined surface.. She now uses the cabinet to hold all of her essential oil(many mini bottles)collection. If you like the country style dishware, the eyelet in the tea color(or you can tea stain some yourself) might look very pretty inside the darkwood and contrast with your white dishes? And tone down the shiny of the mirror? I’m not the OP, but love the first table photo posted by oly with the polished nickel base. That would play up the breakfront trim — it would help the OP if the source was posted too. I’ve never seen a table like that in months of online shopping.

I too prefer the first table by oly. Keep lines simple and transitional, but not super modern, especially with dining chairs. Let the cabinet be the focal point and lighten the look with a display of of complimentary art objects instead of stacks of dinnerware and stemware.

I assume you’ll sprinkle in a few other dark/mahogany pieces in your home so the china cabinet doesn’t stand out? Consider looking at an Amish furniture store. They can hand make and stain or paint any color you would want. The styles are not all Amish/country by an means. You could find something contemporary/transitional and ask for part of it to be stained in a dark wood and the top in another color. We just did this trying to match a set of chairs that I loved. Wanted a rectangle table with self storing leaves and they were able to match colors perfectly. Think of it as a canvas of bare wood, high quality that you are customizing.

I did the same thing, kept the old china cabinet but paired with a white table and cane back chairs. (Dont look at the ugly chandelier, its getting ready to be replaced!ᾒ6ἿC‍♀️). I like the contrast of new and old, light and dark!
