My parents house is like that, but there’s a wall with a wide doorway into the area with the vanity, so it’s open but also easy to close off by just putting a curtain rail up. It’s also oriented to the room such that if you only use enough light at the vanity to wash your hands for a midnight potty run, it really isn’t enough to bother someone in the bed if you place the bed sensibly. Getting ready in the morning would be trickier if you needed to do makeup and so on so needed proper lighting, so that’s where a screen or a curtain would come in.

Lovely! I like the classic white tile and porcelain and how you used furniture pieces in the bathroom. I love that the storage at the end of the tub has pull-outs that can be reached from the toilet. Your custom sink and backsplash and counter are unique and beautiful. Yours may be the first bathroom sink I have seen in which a small or medium dog could be washed! That is a good thing! I showed your pictures to my DH because I am thinking of classic tiled walls with a chair rail for when we redo our bath in a couple of years. He liked it! I was expecting him to say, "too old fashioned." He did not, he said it looked nice. From him, nice is a compliment. He even liked your rows of listello. I was just at the Tile Shop's site the other day looking at the Hampton tiles because someone was selling some on Craigslist. I am hoping to do as you did and get what I can cheaper there, and fill in the rest from the store. I can see that you worked very hard to secure all of your materials - and then cut the floor tiles to size and culled the Hampton tiles, too! Hmm, shared septics aren't unheard of here, between neighbours or in bareland condos developments. But perhaps the shared ones I've seen have been grandfathered. I'd certainly ask about that. The area is zoned general resource (it's a recreational area) which doesn't seem to have a lot of rules about number of dwellings per lot. So I could also stick a separate septic or holding tank in I imagine. This cottage doesn't have closets but certainly has legal egress from the upstairs loft as it has a door to the outside in the loft as well as a proper (legal) stairway from first floor to loft (correct width, nice legal banister and spindles, etc). Bathroom would not interfere wi/egress. I have to get the docs from my realtor (he brought the wrong folder this morning) but I'm assuming the septic is sized pretty big as the main house has four bedrooms (and we would actually remove a bedroom if we bought...two are ridiculously tiny). We do base on number of bedrooms here with a little bump up if using wasteful water fixtures. Edited to add: I'm learning a lot! Multiunit septics here are called cluster and there is provision in the regs to tie a service building on with the guidance of a trained installer. But it seems the usual size here is 1500l per day and that size supports only four bedrooms... So adding a bedroom would cause problems. Taking away a bed might solve some of those problems. They recently updated the regs here to encourage granny flats so the flow calculation for number of bedrooms still holds even if spread across 2 dwellings (previously they added a 15% buffer for 2nd dwelling).

You have the perfect opportunity for a hidden storage space. You can install shelving a foot deep that goes down to the counter height. Use hinged or sliding mirrored doors as the front of the shelves. You can store rolled towels, hand towels, washcloths, Your electric toothbrush, water pick, shaver (with an outlet in a side wall), every toiletry you can imagine, hot curlers, hair dryers, WHATEVER! Even spare TP packages can go in the tallest shelves. If you put in two hinged doors with mirrors on both sides, you can open them both in order to use them to see the back of your head. Under the counter, you can have very deep drawers that go back into that extra foot of space. Or do a floating box for a vanity and put in hidden storage under the vanity for valuables. Access it with push-to-open hidden-hinged doors. You would have to crawl under the vanity to use it, but it would not be suspected under there. See a local glass shop and cabinet maker to make the mirrored doors. Remember that you have to leave room in front of swinging doors for the faucet, so choose a short one or get sliding doors for the cabinet front.
