TCM and Oscar movies

I've been catching up on Oscar winners I haven't seen before or in a long, long time. TCM shows oscar winners for the whole month of March. Yesterday I watched Dr. Zhivago which I haven't seen in about 55 years. What amazed me was how little I remembered of the scenes... but how much I remembered the music. Man, Julie Christie was a stunner, and Omar was pretty easy on the eye too. I've never read the book but would like to at some point.

And I watched Written On the Wind. I'd not seen it before. A really good soap opera type tale. Afterward I looked it up on line and found it was based loosely on an unsolved mystery involving the Reynolds family of tobacco fame. In the movie, they switched it to a wealthy oil family instead.

Anyone else watching?

TCM is my favorite channel. I am watching and recording a few favorites.

I never liked Dr.Zhivago. I felt badly for his wife and child who were waiting for him, not knowing he was off on an adventure with another woman. I did not think their love affair was beautiful. The photography, in Finland, was spectacular and the music was nice.

Being a movie junkie, TCM is my favorite channel. I've seen Dr. Zhivago a million times, but of course watched part of it yesterday. In addition to the leads, Alec Guinness, Rod Steiger, and Tom Courtney are all a pleasure to watch. After that Tootsie was on, which I've also seen quite often, but I watched the first hour again because it's so funny.

Whoo-hoo-hoo! Scorcese and The Departed won!!!!! I was thrilled and I was also very pleased that Alan Arkin took the Best Supporting Actor prize for Little Miss Sunshine. Both Mirren and Whittaker made really gracious speeches about their wins, which was a pleasant change from thanking names on a list. Leo DiCaprio has long since grown out of his boyishness and his roles have gotten better and more demanding. While he didn't win last night (I thought he was nominated for the wrong movie, anyway, and thought his role in The Departed was Oscar-worthy), it will happen for him some day. And then maybe not, of course. There was Peter O'Toole in the audience, looking very longing to be recognized and for the eighth time did not get the prize. Ellen was a delight--warm, witty without guffaws, engaging the audience in ways that delighted them and gave folks like me a chance to get a quick look at "stars" when they were a little off guard and weren't in a "role." And those dancers who looked like Circe de Soleil acrobats and mimed icons of the best pic nominees were mighty clever. When they turned themselves into a VW bus and later a gun, I was laughing out loud. The show had a couple of draggy spots but then it always does, and I just waited past them for the stuff I wanted to see. Overall, set design was simpler than usual and thus more appealing. Meryl Streep fixed her bra strap (again!) and obviously needs to be better fitted in her undergarments. But she was a total charm when Ann Hathaway and Emily I'm-drawing-a-blank were handing out an award; Streep was obviously happy for them and put on a Miranda face just to heighten the fun. Jadon Smith might be the handsomest little kid around and his dad, Will, is his best audience. Talk about a proud dad. And how about Al Gore's team winning an Oscar for An Incovenient Truth? While that won't make some of the naysayers on "that other forum" happy, I was sort of wide-eyed when a man who might have been president of the US bounded on to the Oscar stage with the folks who made his film possible. Nice. Now we're into the film void. Netflix just sent me an e-mail pitching me to rejoin. They know what's going on out there. I might just take them up on the offer, at least until the fall when all this hoopla starts all over again.

We just saw The Queen. I think we're about done with the Oscars although we might still see Notes on a Scandel and both Little Miss Sunshine and Water are coming from Netflix. The Queen had very good acting but I didn't think the story was that interesting. But I've always considered royalty to be rather useless and expensive so I didn't care that much about the queen or her struggles. Diane described Pan's Labyrinth quite well. It is mostly a war story with some fantasy elements. The grisly part is mostly the fights between the army and the rebels which does include the aftermath of the torture of one of the rebels (although thankfully it does not show the actual torture). I feel sorry for my mother right now. She likes to watch the movies on our top ten lists for the year but she hates violence. And pretty much the only non-violent movie on my top ten is Shortbus which has a lot of graphic sex. So I can't exactly recommend that one to her either. I think she'd really like Volver though and all the violence in that is off-screen so I think that one is okay at least.

Jane, We are old movie lovers too. My husband insists that movies started going downhill when they began to make them in color! Punk, I think this is the second season for the trophies. I have a bunch of littler ones, but they don't look as much like the actual Oscar. We used to give some pretty big Oscar Parties, but haven't done so in years and years. Still, I have all the junk I used back then. The only new items are the chair toppers. Oh, I "discovered" the little plastic top hats in the storage box marked "Oscar," but they were still in the cellophane wrapper. I can't remember ever getting them. Jeanne, Glad you like the caricatures. Once I put the table settings together, I just couldn't think how to make it look significantly different from the one I did last year. It looked so plain. . . . Then I bought the printer and I became obsessed looking for images on the internet. Fun, fun, fun.

As for Giuliani (who is she, anyway?), the shoulders needed to be a little more filled out and definitely did not match the "enhancements" popping up. I like to look at the pictures later, too, but did not watch the awards. This morning's paper had the best picture of Colin Firth with his award. I never thought he was that handsome or appealing, but after seeing him in King's Speech and a few interviews, he does have a boyish charm and cute grin. I'm happy he and his movie won.

I ended up watching Tootsie too...only saw it once before and was again amazed at how well Hoffman did!

They've been airing a lot of repeats lately on TCM, that is short times in between when the same ones are shown. I always tune in to see what's being offered.

Dr. Zhivago is a long movie, beautiful, but I do NOT like the ending. It's too sad. I think I've only sat through the entire film maybe four times in my life.

TCM is about the only thing I miss about cable TV.

I remember 'Written On The Wind' - the melodrama, and the lush Technicolor too!

It's one of a genre of movies that I do so enjoy - and all because of TCM. 'The Cobweb' and 'Leave Her To Heaven' are a couple more I likely never would have discovered anywhere else.

There was no happily ever after for Zhivago and Lara. He went home to his wife and son and she was left behind and had a baby girl who we see in the opening scene of the movie. If I recall, she is in an orphanage? The political drama was interesting though.

He doesn't reunite with Tonya. In the movie he gets a letter from her saying that they're being deported and that's the last you hear of her. He's a doctor, living alone, helped by his half-brother, when he dies on the street after seeing Lara. (In the novel he remarries.)

We see Yuri and Lara's daughter (played by the amazing Rita Tushingham) at both the beginning and end of the film. She works in a factory and, crucially, plays the balalaika, which of course belonged to her father.

FWIW, another thing I greatly miss about TCM is their short pieces with behind the scenes/backstories from the actors, directors, etc.

I remember one about Dr. Zhivago - with Omar Sharif, perhaps?

I love TCM. Not sure if this was the channel or not - I watched Cabaret and Network in the last couple of days. Both excellent movies and both Academy Award winners. They are timeless in the way they reflect our current situations.
