What color to paint house & landscaping ideas

Just bought home and inside is all updated just need to work on outside. The house needs new color scheme. Also ideas on what to do for landscape? Im in South NJ Zone 6 and 7.

Those are awfully small windows or is it just the picture angle? To start I would remove that railing. Why does the walk overshoot the side connection?? Remove the concrete that is against the house. Post a picture from the street we need to see the entire front

Does the concrete slope away from the house? It looks to be in good shape — does it provide access from the driveway? Plantings on the lawn side would obscure it and save you the expense of demo and regrading — what about the roots to that large tree? The lighter roof and stone means you would do better to stay in a pastel color like light sage green. light tan. I think you’d have to get darker roof shingles to support dark siding.

Do you like gardening/maintaining landscapes.... or is it a chore? If the former, and if it was my place Id leave the lower grassy portion near water as is for now EXCEPT take down the fence (what purpose is it serving) and I would want to come up with a jazzier /more colorful design for that blah border planting in front of the stone wall (to left of stairs in pic #2 (what are the shrubs that are in there now?). I would put in some sort of grouping of 3 of something taller / more vertical at the very left of this border (tall enough to balance out the weight of that hydrangea). If its to the side it wont block out that much view and besides you could go quite tall maybe even up to 15 ft without blocking any of the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd floor windows. (I assume the bottom level is a walk out basement?) I would bump out that border to be wider, with taller flowering shrubs in back and perennials in front); Front - is that literally the road in the pic or is it your driveway? The grass area is too small to read as a lawn or anything useful and tends to turn into a weed patch - id put in a bunch of low growing, easy to grow shrubs like spirea which can be use dmore as a ground cover (instead of the usual row or border.) I was going to say replacegrass with stone work or pavers with some sort of stone sculptural piece and/or windowboxes/planters as Nancy suggests but if that's the road and not your driveway I don't want to confuse the drivers by having paving right up to your house - there would need to be some sort of clear border between the paving of the road and your house!!! (for obvious reasons - all you need is one tired driver to wreak havoc)

You can read the recommendations from Iowa State University Extension Service for Sidewalks and Trees which bases the distance trees should be planted near pavement on the mature height of the tree. Their recommendations are: 1. trees with a mature height of less than 30 feet, 3-4 feet from pavement, 2. trees with a mature height of 30 to 50 feet, 5-6 feet from pavement, 3. trees with a mature height of greater than 50 feet, at least 8 feet from pavement. You could consider installing some sort of root barrier between the tree and the wall. Here is more information about root barriers. All that said, here are some trees that are recognized as having tap roots. All of these would be considered medium-sized or small trees with a maximum height of less than 50 feet. Fraxinus texensis (Texas ash) has a rapid growth rate and is long-lived, 30 to 45 feet. It also has beautiful fall foliage. Here is more information. Acer grandidentatum (bigtooth maple) has both a tap root system and lateral roots, a moderate growth rate up to 50 feet and beautiful fall foliage. Here is more information.

For a more modern log home you would pick colors the same way you would in a regular home - bring all your pieces together and draw a color out of them...if you are really feeling the country then you may want to be in sage greens, pumpkin, fall reds and things like that. I do agree - no need to paint before cabinets go in - don't rush... find colors you are drawn to and paint poster boards and hang them up and look at them for a week or so... Good luck!

so it's actually more orange, you'd say, then pink? I liked the pink tones! and yes, I hate the brown tones. totally here ya on that one. Such a cool looking house. I suppose doing a lime wash on the brick is a no? I mean, I think you could really brighten her up if you went that route. Look at Romabio and their before and afters. just spend a little time online looking at the transformations. It's not a regular paint either, so it's very very low maintenance. try these. instead of doing tans/greens/sage, try moving over into the blue/green and blue grays, along w/some white and tans. These blues, along w/the orange brick, are natural compliments. I love these two blues w/the white. you have the porch and railing that could use the diff blue tones. don't forget the porch ceiling in the pale blue.

Definetly plan on removing railing as well as mailbox. I’m not sure why the overshoot? Its a small rancher and most of the homes around have similiar windows. The concrete up against house has to go. Just closed on this home 3/1 so the fun is just begining!

Isn’t it interesting how different two photos can be? Wow. Now the siding and roof look to need some serious attention. Basement, slab or crawl?

Powerwash the concrete. It would cost a lot to change it. You could put some planters out there to add color and soften the area. I would plant low growing ground cover or shrubs, nothing tall since the house is low. Get a larger light fixture and a wall hung mailbox.

Your house looks like it is vinyl sided. What material is the stone? If so, make sure to follow vinyl painting guidelines.
