What should I do on the wall behind a wood stove?

I want to update the wall behind our wood stove. We use the wood stove constantly during the winter so what ever I do needs to withstand high temperatures and I can't shrink the size of the 4'x 8' floor pad as the cherry wood floors will be hard to fixI.

Design wise, I am renovating the kitchen (behind the wall) with navy cabinets and brushed gold handles and plan to change the wall colors throughout the house. New furniture has been ordered for the room - including a caramel leather couch and some cream mid century wooden chairs and we are building a vertical wood storage box/ bench to the left of the chimney.

I would like to see the chimney and firewall be the same material. If it were mine, I'd probably add brick behind to match and paint it all white (with a heat resistant paint, of course). I would then think about a tile for the floor that is closer to the wood color (but not a wood look tile) so it blends in, or maybe make a statement with a patterned cement tile. Does your woodstove brand have matching stovepipe available? If so, I'd switch it out for burgundy pipe. I don't know the technical aspects of using tile, but some of these with white tile is a more modern/contemporary look than the brick.

^^agree with @olychick - if budget is an issue, I would paint the tiles and brick in a matte white (in the appropriate paint of course) so they are more uniform

FWIW, last night on DIY channel Kitchen Renovations show, they had my very situation - 4" backsplash on either side of the stove and nothing behind. They ended up tiling back there, but to me it looked odd having the stone (in this case quartz) end on either side of the stove. Hope this works, you can just barely see the backspash on either side but it looks odd to me. (not to say I don't like the tile, it's quite attractive actually)

Sorry took so long to update....These are some photos of the bathroom, although it was still not completely finished at the time these were taken. The door and shelves have been stained a Carbon gray gel stain that almost perfectly matches the vanity. I used 8" white shiplap through out. The wall lights purchased through Lowe's online. The mirror purchased at Pier 1. The shower tile feature is carrera marble patterned, and a sea grey tile purchased at 'The Tile Shop' in Urbandale, Iowa. The laminate wood floors are from Home Depot in Mushroom? or the next grayer color. The vanity is 60" dark grey with carrera marble top, sink, and faucet included. I changed the knobs. I think I ordered from Houzz but can't remember. It's also on Wayfair. It all looks better in person than in the photos. I don't love that the toilet is right in the middle as you open the door but I didn't want the hassle of changing the layout/footprint of the bathroom. Overall I am happy with my choices. The mirror is a little fancy to me but my husband loved it and the design echos the patterned shower tile so I went with it.

The wood paneling appears to be quality, if so, it deserves a Pro cleaning. After having it cleaned, I would suggest a porcelain travertine lookalike, in a warm shade to complement the paneling. Paint the cabinet if need be...not the paneling. Porcelain is a snap to keep clean...vacuum and use a cheap floor steamer. I have two dogs, 200 pounds and 125 pounds, so I speak from experience.

They could be concrete walls which would provide the fire proofing. eta: I can't tell how big/heavy your planters are but Command hooks now have some rated for a pretty high weight. That might work for you instead of trying to drill into concrete. Or think about a plant stand instead of the wall? Or these, maybe? Heavy duty hangers

For now, I would recommend just painting the brick to the wall paint. Live with it for a while and then decide if you want the original back for the woodstove or solid paint color.
