How should I finish the wall behind my farmhouse style bathroom vanity
Help, opinions please!!
I am conflicted on how to decorate the wall behind my new bathroom vanity. It is farmhouse style, 48" charcoal grey (blue hued) with carrera marble top and brushed nickel fixtures. I was going to do all ship-lap but started to feel like it was ship-lap overkill.
Should I continue with the ship-lap? or do wallpaper? or small 1x2" subtle but sparkley tiles such as mother of pearl, or glass tiles, or even small stone veneer?
The ship lap goes halfway up the wall behind the vanity. What is the appropriate place to stop it and transition into a different material?
The mirror in the photo is the mirror that will go in that space, but the two wall lights there now are going in the trash. So suggestions on lighting would be great too.
Details.....The wall is 78" wide by 8ft (96") high. The floors are rustic grey laminate, the ship lap and trim are pure white. The tub/shower combo is white with brushed nickel fixtures and will have light grey 6x18 tiles all around.

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoyes, continue the shiplap. otherwise it will look odd on the side walls. (btw,,,continue the shiplap all the way across and place the mirror on top of it. don't stop it at the mirror)
can you turn the mirror horizontal? looks too tall the other way. you might need more of a square mirror or something wider. the sconces are too far away. look at the two pics. the sconces are only a few inches from the edge of the mirror
your mirror should be about this size

Comments (11)I love the casual comfort of your space, recognizing all the planning it took to achieve that feel! The wainscotting, soapstone, and hex tile floor make that happen for me, as do all the personal touches like the picture shelves and your lovely barnyard art. I love the thoughtful touches like the med cab placement, the shower' s window, and the foot-rest shelf in the shower - which I may be stealing! And saving the chute, even though that meant re-routing it, is just another example of the care and you took to get it right. I have a possible solution to the hand towel dilemma. Remember how farm kitchens often have those three-fingered towel holders under the sink to hold kitchen towels as they dry? The ones where the three rods come out from a center hinge and can be rotated into any position from all lined up together when not in use to spread far apart so that towels on them can dry? Ginger makes them now in two-rod style in nice finishes for the bath. 16" long. It would really match your farmhouse feel. Where to place it is your problem, you are thinking. I say, put it on the wall just in front of the vanity. You often step away from a sink when done, so the towel will be handy. Rings bunch up the towel and it takes longer to dry. Either this Ginger 0322-16 or any straight towel bar in a 12" or 16" size works, height-wise. Comments (12)If you're wanting a more rustic or mountain cabin look, you could use cedar with a natural wood finish but most country porches ended up being painted white. The posts are not larger than 6"x6" and many end up being smaller and round and more ornate with white railing (though I prefer the plain 6"x6" myself). Like these posts: http://acountryfarmhouse.blogspot.com/2012/06/our-front-steps-and-walkway.html You could extend the depth of your porch so that the overhang of the front of the porch roof extends to be even or nearly even with the two story left wing of the home and do consider a concrete porch floor-- it will last a lot longer. You create a block foundation/form, fill in with hard packed dirt and then pour a 6" floor that slightly overhangs the blocks ... which you can face with brick or stone. Then you can use the same brick or stone to enhance the curb appeal of your home and its new entry door. With the new door, showcase it with some great brick or stone steps at least as wide as the door. Since you need only a few steps and have a wall on the left side of the porch, consider starting the steps across from the front door so they are covered with the deeper porch roof and have the front of the bottom step even with the front of the front porch, adding a brick or stone wall between steps and the porch to the right of the steps that can be usable as a railing ... in lieu of adding an actual railing. On the right side of the porch consider adding a "gazebo" feature -- there are different kinds of roof designs you can use if you don't want to just use a hip roof corner -- and have the front porch wrap around that right front corner of the house at least enough to create the wider gazebo feature and add steps leading from the porch toward the back yard. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/112730796896550817/ If you're wanting rustic or mountain, you could use cedar with a natural wood finish but most country porches ended up being painted white. Know your local building codes. You may be required to have a railing or wall depending upon the height of the top of your porch floor. Depending upon the building codes and whether you have small children that actually need a rail ,,, since your porch is not that high off the ground, and especially if you add depth to the porch so there is less likely to be people bumping into each other knocking each other off the porch, you might consider just adding a hedge in front of the porch rather than replacing the railing. Comments (40)I'd paint the walls a warmer color to go better with the floors. I would absolutely get rid of that niche in whatever fire safety way possible. It is far too narrow and deep to be of much use and just looks strange IMO. For the water issue, I think I can add a vent in the ceiling in the room below for the vanity piping which could take care of that issue. Denise, would you be willing to take your layout and shift the 48x60 shower straight down to the bottom RH corner and make it an alcove style with a wall on the top? We have vent piping that goes through the roof in the upper right corner. and then create a cabinet in the space on the upper right corner that extends into the available space ~16". We will lose some floor space, but I think it would be a nice compromise to some of the work arounds. I just tried to do a bit with my snipping tool, so no clue on how it would actually "fit" in the space....See More

4 years agoSorry took so long to update....These are some photos of the bathroom, although it was still not completely finished at the time these were taken. The door and shelves have been stained a Carbon gray gel stain that almost perfectly matches the vanity.
I used 8" white shiplap through out. The wall lights purchased through Lowe's online. The mirror purchased at Pier 1. The shower tile feature is carrera marble patterned, and a sea grey tile purchased at 'The Tile Shop' in Urbandale, Iowa. The laminate wood floors are from Home Depot in Mushroom? or the next grayer color.
The vanity is 60" dark grey with carrera marble top, sink, and faucet included. I changed the knobs. I think I ordered from Houzz but can't remember. It's also on Wayfair. It all looks better in person than in the photos.
I don't love that the toilet is right in the middle as you open the door but I didn't want the hassle of changing the layout/footprint of the bathroom. Overall I am happy with my choices.
The mirror is a little fancy to me but my husband loved it and the design echos the patterned shower tile so I went with it.
