Heavy metal contamination in herbs and spices

This morning the People's Pharmacy interviewed a person from Consumer Reports about lead, cadmium and arsenic in herbs and spices. The results are quite scary. The FDA does not check herbs and spices for heavy metal contamination. CR tested herbs and spices from dozens of companies. The stand out is that thyme and oregano were heavily contaminated in every single sample from every company they tested; basil was also quite problematic. Many other spices showed dangerous contamination--and all especially dangerous for young children. Only black pepper was safe in every sample tested. No company showed safe levels for every spice/herb they sold. You have to check separately every spice/herb.

"For example, a dish that has just ¼ teaspoon each of Great Value (Walmart) Chili Powder, Trader Joe’s Organic Cumin, and La Flor Oregano per serving would contain enough arsenic, cadmium, and lead to pose a concern."

"[But] CR’s tests found at least one product that fit in our No Concern category for every herb and spice we tested except oregano and thyme."

I also encourage you to listen to the People's Pharmacy show, available at their site on Monday.
