Help! Need advice on siding for house with ugly brown roof

We just bought a fixer-upper that we are currently renovating. At one point in its life, the house was a store on the first floor so we think that's what it has a country-store look. Currently, it is a multi-family with 2 apartments on the first floor and 1 apart on the second floor.

The roof is only a few years old and for some reason, the previous owners went with brown. I am having such a hard time figuring out what to do with the siding. My gut says white. I think adding shutters to the windows and painting the porch will also help. We're going to do a lot of landscaping once spring comes as well.

A lot of people suggest green siding for a brown roof but our house is surrounded by large green trees and I don't want it to get lost in all the foliage. I just don't know what to do and this is our first house and our first large project. Any ideas would be so appreciated!

Two houses in my neighborhood have a brown roof. One has medium blue siding (close to a navy blue) and the other has brick red siding. Both houses look lovely!

Edited to add: try colorview.certainteed.com and upload pics of your house. This helped me with color schemes for my house. Excuse the rough tracings of your pillars/door/trim (and I couldn't trace around your porch railing, so it put siding over it) and it wouldn't upload on my phone, so I took pics of my computer screen (hence the glare). 😄

I would go with warm white or warm off-white siding.

The Novik shingles have character. If black is a suitable roof color in your geographical area, it would look pretty good. More reddish brown, like the current roof color, would give a more unified look. It looks like you and your neighbor may need to sort out the gutters in this process. The balcony may have some creative drainage that should be looked at. The middle shrub could be pruned way back and transplanted to a better location. The flowerboxes can be removed, repainted, and replanted with all new potting soil and some spring flowering bulbs. awm03 - That design is really amazing, thank you! capist - Thank you for your mock ups as well. I am a very visual person, so seeing these examples really helps. And the more I think about it, the more I agree that incorporating a subtle Craftsman vibe is probably the right approach. I have always loved the farmhouse look, but I'm realizing that it just doesn't work with our house. And because our house already has such wide room pitches, it already has a slight Craftsman feel. I am surprised to see that I like a darker color better and I think a more earthy tone is better because it works better with the red brick. I am really liking some of these brown tones. A new, wooden door is already on our short list and I love this example. I am a big fan of double doors, so we plan to go that direction instead of side lights. Windows are also in our plans too, but probably a next year project. So my thoughts is that we may get a start this year with paint and landscaping (and MAYBE a new door) and then we can do some other upgrades, like windows, next year. It's worth noting that the top windows do a decent side trim around them already, but you can't really see it in my original pictures because the trim and stucco are basically the same color. If the trim were painted a bright white, it would stand out a lot more, especially against a darker stucco color.

Wow, GA did a great job with that mock up. Totally a classy ranch home. How awesome, another nice American home. I THOUGHT about saying black on the fascia, but with the windows updated on the former garage, there you go. Black takes that brick to modern, and some grass and landscaping makes it timeless. A gem waiting to be polished, truly. You could certainly have the shingles removed, have a radiant barrier installed with a concealed fastener, "standing seam look alike" metal roof put on in charcoal gray color, it would have great curb appeal. https://www.muellerinc.com/roofing Their next tone, a burnished color, is pretty dark and could overwhelm the light to medium tone of your brick. You don't want a house that is dominated by the roof in your vision, just complimented by it..... The charcoal gray from this manufacturer is the perfect tone for your home imho. If you don't have Mueller in your area, do find another manufacturer and choose a color that is heat reflective and has a color warranty which is great. You could put the galvalum on, and save a bit, (that standard silvery color)but the color warranty is only 10 years, the last time I checked.

My house came with a brown roof my siding is white. I will be replacing the roof next year not sure what i will use but i like real cedar shake with white so likely staying brown, lol.

that could be a really cute looking farmhouse. I'd go w/that style.

as you can see, the porch is a big visual attration w/these homes. you can decide if you want to do cedar posts or paint them, a wood deck porch, or paint, and of course when you get around to landscaping, that will be 50% of the look. the last pic is perfect for your home.

you could always think about doing the metal roof portion on the lower part if if comes to it.

No shutters.

concentrate on making the porch look colorful and inviting w/plants, hanging flowers, maybe a porch swing.

paint the ceiling of the porch a Haint Blue,

bring in some diff lighting,

perhaps a new door. A Dutch door would be perfect in a pretty color

board and batten would be nice if you can swing it. you could do a board and batten siding (if you plan on replacing what's there) or do a combo of both

board batten siding, cedar porch ceiling, pendant light, cedar posts

this one is similar to yours, but has the gable roof. see the board and batten? you could do the whole upper story in this.
