Ugly Ranch needs Curb appeal ~ Advice Please!
Comments (4)I think that some fairly inexpensive things could make a dramatic difference. First I would replace the iron columns with some more substantial 6x6 supports (with some moldings perhaps) and add some railings. Also, I would not paint the porch, but stain it. I think taking out the concrete porch would be a very big project. I would also add railings and wider wooden steps to the front door. Paint or replace the front door for pop and in your individual taste. The shutters look out of place and out of scale for the picture window. Shutters should look as if they would actually work, these do not. Once this is done the right of your house would be heavy and you would need to balance this out with a nice curved bed on the left with a fairly large tree to add balance. Zone 5 maybe a nice magnolia. Fill in the large bed around the tree with some nice plantings. Towards the road cries out for a small fence with a gate or maybe some hedges with more beds. A flagstone path up to the front steps. A small tree (maybe a Japanese maple) on the right and curved beds along the walkway and driveway. I think this would take your home from plain to fantastic with the least cost and with things that you can probably do on your own. I am sure you can. I do like the idea of shutters, but think you should look at different sizes and styles. I don't like being critical, however I think that by asking for help you are probably looking for honest evaluation....See MoreOur ranch home is plain. We would like to add peaks to the roof.
Comments (5)Rebuilding the entire roofing system and risking exposure of the home's contents to the elements? Just take 30-40-K and flush it down. The house is attractive as presented. Adding a more textural siding like cedar shake instead of the T-111 would be a better focus for a similar expenditure. That would allow you to address the (inevitable) moisture damage that most of that siding has when used in direct contact to studs with poor attention to penetrations....See MoreUgly 50s house, corner windows create a problem? Comments (7)Change your landscaping. You will fall back in love with your home :) As mentioned above, adding shutters won't help and you don't have the room for them anyway. You have a very nice home. The landscaping is not up to date - it is "blocking" any welcoming entry to your home. Post in the landscaping subforum here on houzz to see what plan those posters can show you. They are truly awesome....See MoreRanch House or MCM? Facade needs help to improve curb appeal
Comments (22)thanks! kendallinsd I think those window changes to the bedrooms would make a big difference to the curb appeal. by the way, I am not against painting brick. if done right, it will be fine. however, yours is a nice muted reddish tone. I think what's not working is that there's too much contrast between the brick and siding, breaking up the shapes. the mockups houssaon and I did for you look better because it gives your house a more cohesive look. I also encourage keeping (or restoring) that pergola. again, it's part of the midcentury shape of that house that makes it special. but like I suggested before, a wood pillar might look better there. have fun. post pics as you improve this adorable home!...See Moreredsilver
