Winter Compost Idea: Will it work?
Comments (2)Won't work ... the classic "hot box" used a DEEP bed of fresh manure under the box as a source of heat to keep the soil warm for the seeds. Because heat rises - it won't go sideways into your box. If you have well-germinated seedlings (from indoors) you can keep them growing in a "cold frame" which can be straw bales with some sort of glass over them. After they germinate they can get by with less warmth....See MorePlanting seeds in 7' of pure compost ???? Am I crazy?
Comments (18)Yes Amy, I would go ahead and use it as I don't think the N will burn the plants. Because you are about to plant, I would mix it up a bit with the rest of the soil/lasagna ingredients to distribute it a bit more. So great to talk to you about something else! How did you get started with the Lasagna method?? I have been very happy with it and think it has been a great way to do it! Our garden looks great due to the raised beds and we mulch the walkways with straw a couple of times a year to keep down weeds, bring in worms, and build the soil there too, in case we ever rearrange the garden layout (though I can't imagine doing that!). Everyone always is amazed at how "clean" it looks and has no weeds (except for the property line where the neighbors weeds come to visit---ARGH!!!). My grandparents (in their 80's) still do the backbreaking till and plant and weed like crazy gardening. I tell them and show them about Lasagna gardening, about doing it organically with NO chemicals, and they just don't get it. It makes me so sad because they work on their garden for HOURS a day (mostly weeding) and this could be so much easier for them. It's just the way they have always done it and they are not about to change. I swear one fall I am going to haul a few bales of hay and some compost over there and spread it around myself! They would just MiracleGro it to death anyway, I suppose! Anyway, I am planting a bit today, I will try to get you a picture of our "empty" garden.... post one of yours if you get the chance! Comments (4)It's all about readily available food. That's a fairly large pile with primo ingredients so it has lots of great food. Based on your description I'd say the C:N was on the higher side (35-40:1 ish). This will help prevent the temperature from going too high and extend the period of thermophilic activity....See MoreComposting questions
Comments (9)Next time try more greens and fewer browns esp. the wood chips as they take a long time to decompose and will use up your N. Moist not wet. If its not hot in 2 or 3 days and you have the right moisture try adding more greens. I do like the wire ring bin shown above, -use hardware cloth its the best. And yes a cover for sure, a tarp or old shower curtain works nicely. The main purpose of a cover is to keep the rain out so you can control the moisture level. If it gets too wet it will turn into a stinky, slimy mess. Like the fire or combustion triangle you need three elements to make compost. Organic Material Water (Moisture) Air (O2) It's all about balance, As mentioned too much water displaces the air. Getting them in the right amounts is what can be hard. Start with lawn clippings then add moisture and it will heat up (is the easiest) so then add some leaves and more moisture if you want to make it larger. Green wood chips will speed it up, dry wood chips will slow it down. Come up with your own recipe for what you have on hand. The trick is to add all of your elements at the same day/time and you should be fine. A compost thermometer is very helpful so you can see/tell if it is warming up. You can tell if it is warmer than the ambient temp. You don't need compost starter or a tumbler. I think the biggest and most common problem with tumblers (well besides the cost) is they don't have enuff air flow. Imagine how much compost you can buy if you spent the cost of the tumbler on compost. The compost pile (bin) doesn't have to be in the sun. The sun has nothing to do with the compost process. You are growing bacteria, that is what heats up the compost pile. So handle the compost materials accordingly, esp. if you have allergies or cuts (or breaks in the skin) on your hands.
