45" square oak table: style/age/origin input
Comments (9)The wheels are metal and rounded. The overall quality of the piece causes me to really doubt this was ever veneered. The wood is just *TOO* beautiful and original and whoever made the table took great efforts to match the grain from one plank to the next. I found it here in Salt Lake where it is the norm for a single piece of furniture to stay in a family for its entire life (I have a piano from 1906 that was in the same family until 2004 when my husband bought it for me along with a few stamped Stickley rockers..thanks to living in Utah we've found many beautiful things when families just are tired of looking at them and happy to part with them.) Additionally, after looking through all of my mother's antique books (she has been a dealer her whole adult life but couldn't tell me what style it was specifically, only able to tell me that it is American and from the early 1900's)...but I am still completely uncertain as to what specific "style" this would be called. Its as thought Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau had a child. The lines are strong but there is a delicateness to the details which is what is completely baffling me and all of my resources. If anyone has any input, I'm still listening. Thank you!...See MoreCurb Appeal and Paint Choices--any thoughts, please?!?
Comments (2)Thanks, saskatchewan_girl, I was thinking of a covered porch in front, about 6 or 7 feet deep and 20 feet across, for a couple of rocking chairs, although a patio or other kind of 'welcoming' hardscaping might work. There are about 20 feet to the tree and I think 20 feet is a rather large dimension for the depth but a smaller version may work. (We will have a wood deck in the back.) I assumed we would remove all the evergreen shrubs in the front and start over. There is a rhododendron that could be nursed back to health perhaps. The weeping cherry(?) just needs a good thinning and shaping and it will be fine. We plan to remove the large evergreen over hanging the house and 'limb up' the large tree that is dead center in front of the house. The paint colors I have chosen (very pale almost white green, white, and sage green) were 'borrowed' from another house I love that has pale lime painted brick/siding, sage shutters and white window trim and a charcoal roof with sage highlights in it. They have a golden oak door on their house that brightens the facade, serves as a focal point, and looks very nice, too, so I bought one to install at this little house. We are not particularly 'brown paint' lovers, although your suggestion sounds attractive and I will play with some paint samples to see what I can come up with. Of particular interest to me is how you would address the (jakey)car port on the far end. It looks flimsy, but the real estate agent said we should keep it for resale value. Also, the large four part living room window really bothers me and I would like to change it to a picture window with side-lights. Does the presently installed window bother anyone else, or is it just me? (-: Thanks again. f....See MoreHow do you keep your style young as you age?
Comments (37)loribee, I finally got a chance to snap and upload some living room photos. Here is the after, which I just love: In the second photo, the Pier One table has the small lamp and Jerusalem Pottery on it. That, and the sofa pillows and rug are the only purchase I made. (sorry I didn't straighten up the throw pillows before taking the picture,) I am not going to "stick" something on the wall over the table. I am going to look over the next year or 2 and try to find something, maybe on vacation next year. Good news is the old boiler thermostat was there. Last year we put in new AC, and they moved all the controls upstairs. So I finally got to yank off and patch the wall where that was. It drove me crazy trying to hide it with something. I couldn't find any good pictures of the before. But before the TV was where the Pier One table is now. So the sofa was between the 2 french doors (and it was too long to look good there). And the leather club chairs and ottomon were on the front window wall. Very awkward to watch TV, because you were not facing it, and had to turn your head. It was hard to see the fireplace, and the room was lined up like a bowling alley. And it had a very large very burgundy rug that just sucked up the light from the north-facing room with 1 window. I honestly can't believe that this looks and feels and functions so much better just by making these small changes. And in case anyones is wondering, the cabinet holding the TV is a sideboard. We removed the lower drawer, drilled a hole through the back for cords, and put the cable box and internet through there....See MoreCan any one help me determine the age of this washstand?
Comments (5)I first became aware of these repros in the 1980's. Maybe they were made earlier than that, but IDK. They are a staple of the "country" decorating style, along with geese wearing aprons and "pukey ducks". Casey...See MoreHelen
