Context is key...........

Bedroom line up top and bottom all the time in budget builds of smaller homes. You can’t always have just closets or other secondary spaces on top of a bedroom. Not unless you're building a 10,000 square feet luxury estate with closets bigger than any bedroom on your plan.

We need to see the plan and there is no right way to do the layout only right for you if an architect is doing this but there are ways to soundproof between floors so I need a lot more info like the plan .

In most cases it is a viable design, hotels do it all the time. If your intended use for any of the bedrooms adversely effects adjacent spaces, that information should be conveyed to your architect so she can make the appropriate isolations.

That is why they sell safe and sound insulation to deal with smaller footprint homes. It is used between floors as well as in bathroom walls.

This is a common configuration for apartment buildings and Its actually easier to provide adequate sound separation between bedrooms than between a bedroom and a kitchen, a family room, media room, dining room, etc. and easier than between adjacent rooms.

Are you assuming your architect doesn't know how to provide sound separation between floors? If that's the case, we can help but only if you agree to forget everything you think you know about sound abatement in buildings.

Perhaps signage in each bedroom that reads, "Don't make loud noises" would suffice?

Flashback to a family vacation. A well-known but old and creaky resort lodge in Vermont. A “leaf-peeper” tour was also staying there. Three times a night in the room above us, we heard the light thump of feet onto the floor, then creak. creak. creak. Across the floor overhead. Couldn’t hear the details after that, but then creak. creak. creak. Back across the floor, then the creak of the bed, and silence. Three times a night.

I’ll bet your house won’t be nearly as creaky.

Bedroom over living room can be just as bad, for the same reason. Trust me.

Surely it's much better to have a bedroom above or below your bedroom than to have living space or a bathroom.

In addition to soundproofing, you can decide that the "bedroom" over the master bedroom be the guest room that only gets occasional use.

But is you really don't want a bedroom over yours, you don't have to have one, you just may end up having one less bedroom in the house, depending on the size of your lot and your budget.
