Paint Design Dilemma Exterior

Help choose shutter and door paint colors

Hi! i need help from this wonderful and talentee community! Id like to give the exterior of my brick home a facelift without painting it. i dont love the dark shutters and door color (couldnt tell you what they are, we bought like this) and i think it makes the exterior dark ans drab.

we are gettinf a new roof installed (Pewter Grey) to replace the current brown/red shingles and allow for a more neautral color pallete.

i would LOVE your suggestions for a lighter color for the shutters and door. i believe the exterior trim is a simple tan. as you can tell the brick is not uniform in color and i dont know which to pick up to compliment paint.

can i get away with a greige? sherwin williams Dorian Gray? darker? lighter? THANK YOU!

I hate to sound like a broken record but every time I see shutters like yours the first thing I am going to say is if you are going to have shutters on your house make sure they are operable and correctly sized to fit the window they are covering. Your current shutters are way undersized for the windows and obviously aren't operable. So, my recommendation is to replace them. While you are doing so you can select a color and have them painted before installation.

Maybe thats part of the reason i dislike the look so much! :) i know going sans-shutters is popular now but i wonder if removing them completely will make my windows appear smaller.…

thank you for pointing that out! i will add that to my must-do list! now to figure out that paint color! lol

Each region of the country has it's own look. I'm not sure if would be considered appropriate for you area. Personally, I would update the white and go with a light to medium shade of tan/taupe or even a sage/olive if it would work with the brick. I'm partial to black shutters and a black door. I can't tell if the dark colored brick is a black or a brown so the above mentioned choice might be a better choice if it is a dark brown. I would absolutely get rid of the blue because that makes the house look more dated.

Hi Diane, I love red front doors. To me they look so friendly and welcoming. Our house is a pale yellow with black shutters. I was afraid of going with a red that bordered on the orange, so went with a burgundy that was on the red/blue end. We liked it so much that we ended up painting the exterior French doors from the dining room, the laundry room French door, the wooden screen door and four garage doors on the detached garage. I’m afraid the front door picture was taken in the late afternoon with the sun partly on it, but you’ll get the idea. The paint has held up remarkably well, considering they were painted 18 years ago. We used Sherwin Williams “Burgandy” exterior latex paint in a semi-gloss. Best of luck in your endeavor.

Remove the shutters they actually detract form the windows the house is such a mish mash of styles i would keep the front door a simple one painted the same as the house that entry has so much going on no need for anything else.IMO the front porch is all wrong for the house and I would remove it and replace the doors with a large window to make it look like it was never a porch.Sorry but the architect that designed this house should get another job.

@Colonialgp, the furniture for this room is stained a brownish-black, and the bed is iron, but with a matte antique bronze finish. (It's furniture I already have from a previous bedroom).

Please post a photo from further back. Maybe you don't need the shutters, which would save you money.

I dont think peweter gray is the best color for your house with your brick. A brown color would work much better. Looks like thats what you have now too, by your picture. Also do not pick shingles that are variegated light to dark, nor the architectural style, they will fight with your brick, and you will hate it. You need to use a standard solid color shingle, on your roof. I also dont mind the brown door or shutter color, but, the light tan trim, just looks like it does not belong.

The shutters do need to be sized right. I think a gray roof will work if there's gray in the brick. Kind of hard to tell for sure from your pix. The brick pretty much looks warm. I agree with cat_ky regarding variegated shingles not working with the brick...too busy. I would pick the darkest shade from the brick for the shutters, as long as it works with the roof, too.

thank you all for your input. i agree with the suggestion to have a uniform roof shingle. respectfull i disagree that i have to stick with a brown/red roof. im going with Pewter Grey and will remove the shutters if possible and will paint thr doors a lighter version than they are now.
