Nice! Whatever happened to sprouts? They used to be in every salad bar. I loved them. They tasted like grass. I never tried sprouting on my own.

There are discussions there on microgreens, which are somewhat similar.

Personally, I have not made sprouts like yours since the 1970s, and I think I only made alfalfa sprouts, which were very popular then.

I have a pound or so of various microgreen seeds in my beer fridge that I should use. I think I have a brassica mix, mustard, and a radish mix IIRC. Haven't grown any since last winter.

I stopped buying sprouts years ago as it seemed every other day there was some bacterial contamination or other in them.

I buy canned bean sprouts, heat with garlic, butter, fresh mushrooms and serve over grilled hamburger patty, yummy

I used to sprout wheat.....wow....back in the 70's....then put them in wheat bread. I don't like the taste of sprouts. Grass....yep...that's what I remember. :0)

@Alisande....do you put a dressing on them? What kind?

Oh, those look so good, Alisande. Haven't sprouted in a long time, but you've moved me to do so. I love all kinds of sprouts.

Lars, thank you for the helpful suggestion, and if I had more time to engage in that kind of dialogue I'd do it. But I'm supposed to be doing other things today, and so far I've dealt with sprouts and photographed nine deer in my backyard. And did some eating. :-)o

Nicole, I usually add them to one of my big salads or stir-fries. Depending on what else is in the salad, I normally dress it with olive oil and either fresh lemon juice or balsamic vinegar blended with rice vinegar, plus seasonings. Occasionally I get more creative. I recently bought a jar of sumac, so I see a new salad dressing in my future.

Annie, I think the CDC cites sprouts as one of the foods most likely to be contaminated. But I'm sure (I hope!) they're talking about store-bought sprouts. If you have clean hands, clean trays, and good water, I don't see much of a risk for sprouts grown at home.

I was told years ago that I shouldn't eat alfalfa. I forget why, but I think it had something to do with autoimmune issues. I'll have to look it up. In any case, there's no alfalfa in the mixtures I bought.

You are inspiring me, Alisande! I haven't sprouted anything in a pretty long time. Not sure why, I love sprouts. I especially love a mixture of alfafa, clover, mustard and radish sprouts. And I think I still have some seed for that around here somewhere, wonder if it is still good.

One of my favorite ways to eat sprouts is as a substitute for lettuce in a sandwich. Thinly sliced rare roast beef, sprouts and some avocado slices on very lightly buttered whole grain bread is heaven for sure!

I occasionally do sprout them, usually eat them in sandwiches or salads.

I love sprouts,especially alfalfa sprouts. I have been sprouting them on and off for a while, I don't buy the sprouts in the grocery stores anymore.
