I am in the process of getting estimates for replacement casement windows and sliding door. I have had four companies come out and give me quotes for both vinyl and fiberglass casement windows. My problem is that the companies are giving me conflicting information regarding the exterior color I would like to use. I want a bronze color on the exterior. Two of the companies told me that it would be no issue to use a dark color vinyl (bronze) on the windows/ vinyl sliding door and the other two companies have told me that you shouldn't do that because the bronze colored vinyl will warp and fiberglass would be a better option. Can I go with a vinyl bronze color on the exterior or will there be issues in the future? Any opinions on this would be so helpful because I have no idea what to do since two companies said yes and two said no.

Also, I am getting conflicting information regarding doing pocket replacement versus full replacement. My windows are large (a 4 section casement that is one, large window and a 3 section casement...one window, too ). One salesman told me you should not do pocket replacement with a casement window since they will cut the Mullions that will compromise the frame of it since they have to saw around the window to do the pocket installation. My home is older (from 70's) and not new construction. Any advice on which type of install should be done would be so helpful, too. Thanks!

As long as you are choosing a quality product, the bronze exterior is no issue (including vinyl). The paint coatings used today have reflective properties that maintain similar temperatures to much lighter colors.

As for the mullions, unless those are load bearing with studs inside (rare), they can be cut with no ill-effect. There's isn't much "structural" about the original frame. WIth that said, there are some odds and ends depending on the exact circumstance that would dictate whether a pocket is a great option or not, whereas full frame is pretty universal. Some companies just prefer to do one over the other for their own reasons, and try to push you in that direction.

Painted vinyl windows have been around awhile and I have not seen one warp yet. Typically casements

are individual units mulled to themselves as one unit and they are not structural. These will have a continuous header which carries the load . So yes , you are be fed a little salespersonship.

We had a similar decision to make except that the casements were to open into a screened porch and we were concerned that while on the porch, people might run into them. We have double hung windows with grills on the top half all throughtout our home but I didn't want my sink centered on a middle piece of wood between two casements. Was just something I didn't personally like for our kitchen. We then saw a similar window to what is in my most recent post which has sliders where the side casements usually are and a large picture window in the middle. WE LOVE IT because it gives us unobstructed view, still has the venting options, screens are on the outside and we felt that having the option of the grills on the side windows, helped it to look more traditional like the rest of the windows in our home....our window is one of the best choices we made - we just love it! My husband and I recently replaced the operator on an Andersen casement window that looks like yours. Our house was built in 1984, and one of the bedroom windows had the same problem that you describe: it would open but closing it involved removing the screen and pulling the window shut by hand. The operator cost about $50 including shipping from Windowparts.com. We waited until the weather was not too hot, not too cold, and not windy. We followed the instructions provided in the link below. The only difficult part is removing the trim without breaking it. I was able to get a putty knife underneath the trim and located the two finishing nails that were holding it in place, and my husband cut them by sliding a hacksaw blade underneath the trim. We took our time carefully prying the trim up, and the whole process took maybe 20 minutes. Our trim is painted, so scraping, sanding, and painting took another 30 minutes are so. It would have taken longer if I hadn't painted the trim a few months ago, but because I had, I had to paint only the immediate area where we worked. Good luck! It's really not that hard to replace the operating mechanism. Pry up the bottom sash stop, over the operator, and it will expose the part to be replaced. The arm of the operator just clips to a bracket on the sash. Then replace the mechanism and replace the sash stop. Fifteen minutes....

Not sure how he arrived at that "cracked frame indicates water" without a more detailed examination of the exterior. That being said, to say that water is getting into a Pella clad window is certainly a safe bet and playing the percentages. I would not replace 1 casement with another unit adjacent. Unless the windows are of the exact same style and model, it will look funky. I would do a full assessment of all of the windows and see if these problems are not indicative of other issues being experienced by the other windows. If your project is going to necessitate that you replace a bunch of units, that may have some impact on product selection. I do agree that something with a less moisture sensitive exterior (i.e. fiberglass or vinyl vs. clad wood) might be a better way to go at this point. There are plenty of great wood windows out there, but even the best only come with a 10 year warranty and will come at a definite premium over fiberglass or vinyl. Just depends on what sort of interior/aesthetic look you are going for.
