casement window replacement suggestion?

This is another windows in my house that has issues. I figure it might be easier to have a separate thread for this window. It has a foggy glass and i was thinking to get a new glass or new sash for this one but Pella people said the problem is bigger than i thought. He pointed out that the cracked and soft sill stop means water has gone in the frame and the whole window needs to be replaced and the frame needs to be inspected. If i do not got it taken care of the wall below the window will get damaged one day. I am just wondering if there is other option there? Pella gave me a quote of $2,000 for a new window including installation (the same aluminum clad wood type). I am more inclined to have full fiber glass window but since there is another aluminum clad wood window right beside this one and the pella guy thinks it will look ugly to have two types of window next to each other.

My questions are:

1. is there any option other than full window replacement?

2. shoud i go aluminum clad wood or fiber glass? I like in Nebraska.

3. Price wise, what is the price for a Marvin window?

High end vinyl may be a better option in your case. Numbr 1, you will get a more air tight window. Number 2, you wont have the maintenance and potential for wood rot.

7'3" is pretty big for a casement. When open, that size sash would put a lot of pressure on the hinges & operator. If you are leaning toward casements, and don't mind tearing the old frames back to the studs, then you might want to consider casements with transoms. Most manufacturers have the ability to provide detailed drawings of window combinations, so experiment with styles that might interest you.

No, the windows are completely rotted out in their casings. I suspect that this is from some landscaping we had done about 12 years ago where the ran the sprinklers on a timer and they continually hit the house directly on these windows. Here is another picture where you can see the whole window has sunk into the sash so there is a gap at the top. What window brand do you recommend?

It is actually like a charcoal, not pure black. Yes, our old windows are leaking, losing their insulation and argon gas. We will do some double hung in other areas of the house, just wanted to keep the view opened up without the 50/50 in certain areas. Thank you for your suggestion!!

This was done by lowes they used simple red house wrap tape to seal the nailing fins and then went over it with the 4 inch cedar. When I found the 50 foot roll of Pella Smart Smart Flash they did not use I had a bird. I told em they would have to take all the trim boards off to replace the red cellophane like tape. So the 12" siding is cut flush with the removed 4 inches of tar paper. Your saying they should put down a vapor barrier to the edge of the tar paper, wrap around the opening and lay the windows down(so pull out the windows also?) Then nail the fins down over sheathing and then go over with the Smart tape like they should of? How do you get vapor barrier to abut to to the tar paper or peal the siding back to get under tar paper and tape down? The jobs been a nightmare from Lowes its a week of downpour rain my windows are waiting to be caulked and I told em the job had to be done right. They asked to use my ladders had no caulk, had to reorder the interior trim boards and jobs now a week old windows are half but put in. Thanks What WRB?

Not sure how he arrived at that "cracked frame indicates water" without a more detailed examination of the exterior. That being said, to say that water is getting into a Pella clad window is certainly a safe bet and playing the percentages.

I would not replace 1 casement with another unit adjacent. Unless the windows are of the exact same style and model, it will look funky.

I would do a full assessment of all of the windows and see if these problems are not indicative of other issues being experienced by the other windows. If your project is going to necessitate that you replace a bunch of units, that may have some impact on product selection.

I do agree that something with a less moisture sensitive exterior (i.e. fiberglass or vinyl vs. clad wood) might be a better way to go at this point. There are plenty of great wood windows out there, but even the best only come with a 10 year warranty and will come at a definite premium over fiberglass or vinyl. Just depends on what sort of interior/aesthetic look you are going for.

if i were able to replace all of the windows I will definitely choose fiberglass or vinyl. It is just the rest of the windows are all clad wood.

"Unless the windows are of the exact same style and model, it will look funky." are you saying even a Aluminum clad wood window from another manufacturer will look funky? I am not a big fan of Pella wood window but if that is my only option there then it is going to be a hard decision. The Pella sales person did mention the they started to give life time warranty to Aluminum clad wood windows since last month ( March, 2017). So do you think Pella Proline is worthy to try this time?

Not really on the "worthy" question. Different manufacturers won't look like apples and oranges, but there will be some perceptible difference in both the older windows and the different window. What and how much you can tolerate without it bothering you is a personal question to be honest.
