Remodeling Design Dilemma Kitchens

Please help with the flow of our dining/kitchen/living!

Need help with our flow!!

This is our latest plan from our architect. I'm concerned with the fridge in the middle of this space, although we wanted to break up the dining and the kitchen a bit.

Seeing this iteration, I think it may be best overall to get this fridge out of there, open up the space, and put the fridge where the current pantry is (and put 21 inch pantry just next to that.

Thoughts?? Any other workarounds I'm missing?? I will be forever grateful – this is a once-in-a-lifetime project for us!

Yes move the refrig to the current location of the pantry. Build a pantry across from the refrig in approximately the same size as refrig.

Does the beam right in front of the ref stick down below the ceiling?

If you remove the ref "kiosk," you will have a no-man's land of floor space (unless you want a seam or table transition on an expanded island). And will the skylight remain?

I've been playing with the SW color visualizer tool and came up with a ton of different schemes, but this one is pointing me toward an overall house palette that I really like. It's very "beigey", it isn't at all trendy, but it's very warm, looks a lot like the clothes in my closet - jeans and earthy tops :) - and just might work. If I want to spice it up, I think I can add or swap a gray such as amazing gray or intellectual gray into the mix to bring it into the 21st century. (There's a good amount of gray in the fabric already.) I know that the colors that the app generates aren't exact, but it's a good road map. Waddyathink? :)

The key to making spaces flow is to have similar styles and connection with the colors in each space. Your kitchen cabinets are beautiful. The rug in the dining area is beautiful. The sofa and flooring all work together. The table has a country feel to it that doesn't seem to fit with the other two rooms. The art in the hallway is also very country craft, while nothing else seems to have a country flair. The blue gray in the living room is thowing things off. The walls are too yellow and the color of the valance in the kitchen has nothing to do with any other color in the space.The crown molding in the living room is out of place with the rest of the space. I would remove the crown molding and the kitchen valance, paint the walls a light gray green and replace the silver blue grays with green grays in the living room. I would either replace the entire dining set with something more contemporary or paint the white base a dark green gray and get 4 upholstered chairs for around the table. Ditch the entertainment center. It is too dark and massive. A simple tv stand would be better. Now choose a color that you love. Bring that color into the kitchen, dining area and living room with a few pieces. A platter and fruitbowl in the kitchen, some flowers for the center of the table, art, a coffee table book, a vase in the livingroom Add a few throw pillows or a throw. Just enough that the color draws your eye from room to room. When you get new a new coffee table, end tables or ceiling fan, get the same wood as your kitchen cabinets.

Your rug works with the couch, and it also works with the color of the dining room. The dining room color would work very well in your living room. It is the beige that is throwing everything off. Its the living room that needs painting, not the dining room. In the dining room, I would paint that white table and chairs black, or a much darker color. Then add color to both rooms for accent colors in pillows, etc. Black coffee and end tables would add a lot to the living room too. It may be easier to paint the dining room, but, it wont solve your problems in the living room. Its still beige, and it still doesnt work. I love your couch, and your rug. Good choices.

@threers we are considering putting something on the other side of the fridge/wall there, but is that then too far away from the fridge and everything else in the kitchen?

@3onthetree the beam is "hidden" above everything, above the ceiling, so no real restrictions there. you feel the space would then be too open with nothing there? Can I ask if you have another suggestion, or suggest to keep things the way they are?

I think you have wall space in the dining room, continuing along with your current counters or you may have wall space on the other side of your dining room as i suggested. Your architect can determine if there is room. You can decide if either of these possible spaces are too far away from the work area. I have in lived in apartments, condos and houses...and in my experience having not enough space for your things is more frustrating than having to take a few extra steps. You decide.

"beam is "hidden" above everything, above the ceiling"

You should verify this with the architect. It is drawn as a soffit (called "hidden" lines in CAD speak) the width of a beam. If so, the soffit would delineate a space below it and IMO breaks up the whole concept. In the case of a soffit, I would slide the ref over to put the "kiosk" in line with this soffit, put a coffee station/buffet on the back side for the Dining, adjust the pantry with wing walls, and reduce the island size.

Otherwise, if the orientation of the roof allows a flush beam up in the attic, it would be shown in a different drawing convention with a single line down the middle of the beam only (called "center" line in CAD speak). If this is the case of a flush beam, then it would not even need to be shown on this particular drawing at all. Construction documents yes, but not a furniture-level sketch for you to review.

I peeked at your older thread regarding the whole house remodel. I am not 100% sure of your roof layout, but it appears you will also need a beam that cuts right through your Living Room where the existing back wall of the house is located. If so, same situation as the Kitchen beam - is it flush or soffit?
