flyleft, thanks! The sink is from Sonia, in the 31.5" (?) size. We had the vanity built by a local guy, a slightly adapted version of a Sonia vanity. We liked the look of the sink so much, that we ordered two more of them in the 24" width (length) for our upstairs bathrooms. Sonia also makes the sink in a 39" version. FYI, if anyone plans on ordering one, make sure you specify one with overflow holes (if that's important to you).

I had a lot of trouble with this decision in my self-designed bathroom. My advice is find a photo of a vanity top with a backsplash to see the difference. Pick the photo of the setup you like best and print/save it to show your contractor or tile shop or countertop fabricator exactly what you want. On the site Houzz dot com with decorating photo examples (thousands!) from designers I see that the modern designer look is not 4 inch countertop backsplash. Now I see another reason vessel sinks are so popular--they eliminate the need for the counterop backsplash/sidesplash. the white trim prob wouldn't be much higher than the granite. (usually 4") So, if you really want higher, you could see about doing some decorative thing to make it higher, but not sure how that's going to look. A good bathroom paint on the wall, and vinyl trim piece with equally good enamel paint, should be impervious to your splashings! (I would have done a wall mount faucet. much easier to keep clean) then you could have had the granite come up about 9-10 inches. or, you could do something like this i would have forgone the wainscot on that wall and just done the tile one last pic w/the wainscot. the trim piece sits a bit higher than the countertop piece. take you pick of what you like.

Hello CK- Although we frequently do use a 4-6 inch backsplash made out of matching material to the countertop, we have also used tile in a vertical position as a backsplash for a fresh, modern look. Even if you could purchase an identical 6 inch quartz piece, the vertical tile backsplash will add more texture and dimension for visual interest, or "excitement" as your contractor suggested, in a very neutral space.
