Paint job from pro. Am I too picky?
Comments (7)"I think that the pro gave their estimate based on your actual walls, so that to say after the fact that they did not charge for smooth walls is bunk." sorry diana - this is not entirely accurate. Just as GD says, MOST painters figure in a cursory sand and fill of scrapes nail holes and minor dings. They are not going to take hours fixing that botched patched job by the CATV guy or previous homeowner that didn't sand down the patching compound enough before the last paint job. Those walls will never be smooth again unless hours and hours or sanding and possibly a skim coat are applied. THAT IS NOT included in a typical re-paint regardless of whether the painter previews your walls beforehand or not. A good painter will ask you about these things beforehand and would give levels of pricing based on how close to perfect you want your walls. "If they patched after the first paint coat, then they should have given the affected areas a second coat before going over it all one last time. " Absolutely ! "They did things improperly and need to fix it for you." I'm not sure this is accurate either. The drips aren't really professional and should be addressed along with the poor / uneven coverage. Assuming the BM spec paint is a "primer inclusive" type paint I think all that's needed is a light sand and a final coat of taupe. This is quite a ways away from improper. kansas - when you went shopping for a painter did you go looking for the best painter, the best deal, or a rec from a friend or colleague? It shouldn't make a difference, as sloppy is sloppy at any level , but I'm curious none the less....See MoreAre we being overly picky or is this a bad bevel Tile backsplash job?
Comments (10)I would post in the bathroom forum where the tile guys hang out. It looks like there's too much grout so it's covering the edges. The edges look uneven and chipped. Something is taking the clean edge from your tiles. Tiling should start at the cabinet, not the counter. By bringing it out to the counter, he's created that awkward overhang at the wall cabinet....See MoreBad tile placement or too picky?
Comments (24)I agree with the posters above who comment on some of the local "pros" annoying routine of giving arrogant unsolicited advice on OPs personal tastes. That said, I also agree with comments regarding the lack of knowledge displayed by this "tile setter". Wood look tiles need to be laid differently than other tiles. They need to be staggered similar to how a wood floor gets staggered. The best wood-look tile I've seen was staggered unevenly, almost randomly, but fairly close to 1/3 of the length of the tile. This takes careful planning and more time to lay the tile to look its best. Before hiring contractors when not using designers, it helps to do tons of research on best practices, so these issues can be discussed and one's choices put into a written agreement. It's probably too late to have a do-over done at the tiler's cost. But, at the least, have the tile guy replace the offending tiles and have him read this thread! Maybe he'll learn something....See MoreBad grout job? or am I being picky?
Comments (5)No you're not being to picky. Notice the second horizontal joint down in the photo is smooth as it should be. That consistency would be proper throughout the installation. Unfortunately it appears folks have lowered their expectations. The result of a market full of unqualified labor....See MoreMarlene Andrade
