What is the best flooring for my family room?

I live in southern California. My kitchen has mexican saltillo type 8" square pavers that border my family room which is carpeted. I want to change the family room flooring. It is the busiest room in the house. The other side of the family room leads into the laundry room and back door. It also has pavers. Should I continue the pavers into the family room? Or switch to wood flooring? I like the pavers and the house has a southwestern flair. That way the pavers would run straight through from the kitchen to the back door, all open plan. Or should I stick with carpet? Don't care for the carpet. I'm trying not to have too many different types of flooring. The formal living room has off white carpet and the dining room has travertine marble tiles and so does the entry. What do you suggest?
