Design suggestion for family room with weird niche and fireplace
Comments (3)Gray would work well, I would look at a lot of wallpaper before deciding. I like the grass cloth. A darker gray might look better. I think even a small graphic pattern with the color of your walls would be fun. This Mediterranean scene is a nod to your fireplace. Both the black and the white colorway would be great....See MoreHelp - Fireplace in middle of room
Comments (10)The cheapest thing is to cut some holes in the plasterboard to see what's inside. Save the pieces so you can patch later. If there is structural stuff (beams, electrical, plumbing, ductwork) inside, as others suspect, this is going to be a huge and expensive project. It's unlikely someone built all that for the heck of it. Then you have the decor elements: cabinet, mirror?, that big brown thing, plant gone wild, etc. That is much easier and cheaper to fix. Maybe do a consult with a good interior designer and find out what your options are....See MoreFamily Room Fireplace - TV over fireplace or put in media center?
Comments (9)Another consideration is convenient seating directed toward tv viewing..close enough ..and with tv mounted low enough to view without having to lay “back” and lookup...to view...sometimes a challenge in a big...tall room...never mind when there are multiple windows allowing a lot of sun shining in your eyes for daytime viewing...See MoreFireplace conundrum and overall family room design challenge
Comments (8)You should be able to get a corner media cabinet to put under the TV to hold peripherals and ground that zone -- no built-ins needed. As for the rest, I'd take down the valences and try just living with the blinds for a while. It could be that accordian blinds would be all you need, or you could get some that are bottom-up/top-down to give you some privacy while keeping the light. You need a larger piece of art over the fireplace -- surely there's another place for the current beloved one. Look at the firebox for scale, think horizontal. Your area rug is too close to the carpet -- either do without or get something (a) large enough for the front feet of all the furniture to rest on it, and (b) with some contrast to the carpet. Ideally this would also introduce some accent color to the room: right now, if you get rid of the red chairs, the only unifying color is beige. (Maybe the art over the couch is bringing something you could work from.) Coffee table? lamps? Mix some books into that bookcase?...See MoreBrown Dog
