Your herbs will probably do ok, but when it comes to veggies some need more hours of direct sun than others. It sounds like your max full sun exposure is around 5 hours, what varieties of veggies do you plan to grow?

Thank you! I was hoping to grow everything I need for a salad so lettuce, spinach, carrots, beets, tomatoes, and hopefully some peas!

My tomatoes only get morning sun. Depends on where you live, but here afternoon sun would scorch most everything. Lettuce, spinach and peas would likely grow well for you.

I know tomatoes will grow. I gave my brother a Mountain magic tomato plant 3 years ago and he stuck it under the eve of a east facing wall. I told him it's not a good location but it grew and produced good, and as well as mine in full sun. Year 2 and 3 did even better with a yield of 780 tomatoes on year 2 and 998 last year! (this variety has 2 oz fruit). He counts what he picks and puts it on his phone for a tally until frost kills the plant.

I agree that your veggies will grow with morning only sun. I have a lot of mature spruces so don't have single spot that gets full sun. Enjoy the garden and the fruits of your effort.

Doesn't take much sunlight to grow vegetable plants. But the difference between growing plants and growing PRODUCTIVE plants is often sunlight. Greens will grow fine with 4-5 hours of sun, but fruiting vegetables like tomatoes will call for a reduction of expectations with that much sun.

Depending on your climate. Be aware that many of those like cooler weather like the spinach, lettuce, peas, carrots. You grow lettuce, spinach, and peas in cooler Spring, then they are pulled by hot Summer, the late day shade may help them. By mid Summer, the tomato plants will grow large. Cherry tomatoes should do decent.

Elizabeth: There are very few spots in my garden with full sun and I love my trees too much to change that. I have been growing vegetables with much less than full sun and they do fine. They grew plentifully and with good flavor and give my family and friends great joy.

@kevin9408: in which zone is your brother growing Mountain Magic tomato? I just ordered seeds for this variety from Johnny's select seeds. Good to know that Magic Mountain has been so productive for him. Thank you for sharing!

@katyajini My growing zone is 4b. I also put a mountain magic in a big pot with a water drip emitter hooked up for my nearly blind uncle by his front door. It's on the east side of a two story house with 1/2 day sun at best and it does well with nearly 100% perfect fruit, so I don't need to worry about him eating diseased. cracked or bug infested tomatoes. These plants are built proof with great flavor and two sliced will cover a sandwich, so I stopped growing cherry's long ago. Glad you got them now, later in the year the seeds become hard to find.

From my experience you can grow any variety of tomatoe with the amount of sun you have. I grow the big heirloom tomatoes. Tomatoes like Dester, which I think has the best taste, and Pink Brandywine which has a distinctive sweet taste, I enjoy. Pink Brandywine isn't a big producer for me though. I also grow Belgium Giant, which live up to their name, and Mortgage Lifter, usually my first tomato. Also Marianna's Peace. The closest I get to growing a cherry tomato is Yellow Pear.

I would never argue that full sun won't grow a better crop, but you'll be thrilled with what you grow and your crops will certainly be better that what you'd grow if you gave up your dream.

@kevin9408 If I may ask: what is the growth habit of Magic Mountain? Is it a big sprawling vine like many cherry tomatoes? I typically grow cherry tomatoes on a large trellis, the stems pulled back and tied, the plant almost flat. This works for very big plants dont have much structure. Or would I grow Magic Mountain free standing with a tomato cage? Thanks!

@katyajini No, not like cherry tomatoes but more like other indeterminate varieties but somewhat more vigorous. The tomatoes are easy pickings compared to cherry and even my near blind uncle can find them in the bush.

I use concrete remesh wire with 6" x 6" openings 5' high and they waterfall over the top but nothing like Cherry tomatoes. A total vine length of about 8' feet in my zone before frost kills them but manageable in a high cone cage. I also don't prune the suckers to maintain the number of vines for bigger tomatoes, they all end up perfect.

I don't grow cherry tomatoes anymore thanks to mountain magic.
