Does glucosamine/chondroitin work in animals?
Comments (9)There are also other, herbal products that might help, instead of or in conjunction with the glucosamine/chondroitin, which may allow you to use less of the expensive stuff. I don't remember all the names off hand, but if you look for products with Boswellia, Devil's Claw, Turmeric, these will also give anti-inflammatory effects. There's a product for horsess called Bute-less (or, it USED to be called that, may have changed) for those horse owners who were worried about the long-term effects of bute on the gastric system - I can attest to that one working for my brother's horse - and I think it can also be used for dogs, adjusting the dosage. There's another called DGP, which originated in Australia, but can be found here - the anecdotal evidence says it works. They all will probably take at least 3 weeks to work, maybe 4-6 weeks for the full effect to be seen. They might be less money than the glucosamine/chondroitin. Try googling Hilton Herbs products - I think they also make products for dogs as well as horses....See MoreArthritis in pets
Comments (19)Thank you all for the suggestions. Ferrett (who is our bestest cat) gets max health care and is now taking Cosequin (the ingredients are Glucosamine and Chondroitin) so Jody, you'll have mail. The new drug is somthing that's only recently been approved for cats (dogs have been getting it for some time) it's a non-steroidal anti-inflamatory; twice a week and it should start being effective in a week and a half. I guess X-rays are good because we can non-invasively see what the problem is, but dang, those two ball and socket joints were bad. Kate, I giggled at your comment about this being a cat who tolerates water. At the Vets office yesterday I was muttering about sewing her a wet suit (yes, Project Runway is on). A friend in NOLA has a Katrina dog, mini dachshund and has wading pool parties for the dachshund play group. I can just see putting our aging cat population in custom fitted wet suits for their daily exercise.... Ann...See MoreVegies?
Comments (12)do not give your pets grapes or raisins they can't process them and if they eat too many it can kill them much the way chocolate does! a friend of mine found that out the hard way!! seriously you can probably google it much the way i did, and i found out: The grapes and raisins came from varied sources, including being eaten off the vine directly. The dogs exhibited gastrointestinal signs including vomiting and diarrhea and then signs of kidney failure with an onset of severe kidney signs starting about 24 hours after ingestion of the grapes or raisins. The amount of grapes eaten varied between 9oz. and 2 lbs., which worked out to be between 0.41 and 1.1 oz/kg of body weight. Two dogs died directly from the toxicity, three were euthanized due to poor response to treatment and five dogs lived. Due to the severity of the signs and the potential for death, the veterinarians at the poison control center advocate aggressive treatment for any dogs suggested of ingesting excessive amounts of grapes or raisins, including inducing vomiting, stomach lavage (stomach pumping) and administration of activated charcoal, followed by intravenous fluid therapy for at least 48 hours or as indicated based on the results of blood tests for kidney damage. there is a need to panic if a dog eats three or four grapes but if the whole bunch is missing from the table one day, it would be good to think about watching for any signs of a toxic reaction. i copied paste that from www.vetinfo4dogs.com/dtoxin.html...See MoreHow to get a dog to use a dogbed
Comments (21)I guess I didn't explain this post very well or only parts of it are being read. The bed is now for Annabelle.I can forget the bassets using it as thats not going to happen.I do lift them every night three times to get on the bed.I don'think I can do it much longer because of health but do intend to do it as long as I can. They do not prefer floor lounging at all whatsoever!I cover all the pieces of furniture with sheets, throws, etc that my dogs get on because of shedding, their odors, etc. Those are what I wash daily.Theres been no need to wash the covers at all on the bed I made as no one will use it.Annabelle is crated at night but I had hoped she would nap on this bed in the day but no such luck.I guess I will eventually move it out as it takes up room. Thanks for all the input.....See Moresocks
