Which color to choose?

Long story short we are custom built our kitchen. I am debating between light beige/taupe and white kitchen cabinets which I want in high gloss. We will have 2 black frosted cabinet doors, our appliances will be black stainless and stainless steel. Lightest granite countertops and not sure yet what for backsplash. Our island will be stained and also planning to add stain crown around the hood. Solid or engineered flooring. I’ve looked for different ideas all over the internet, they all look good but I still can’t decide between the colors. What would you choose?

I love my high gloss white cabinets but honestly what you are planning seems very busy to me so maybe post your plan and pics of all the choices. BTW no black stainlees ever . IMO high gloss cabinet are contemporary so no crown molding in the space . Please pics of all the choices and also do you have a KD, not a cbinet sales person, but an actual independant KD and who is making the custom cabinets.

It doesn't matter much where the house is located since the lights would be used when natural lighting is insufficient. If you prefer daylight lighting, you could have all lights daylight color. Alternatively, if you do have physical separations- opaque walls, you could have different colors depending on the space.

The garage door is clay. The trim is sand. Changing the siding, trim, facia, gutters etc is not in the budget so I have to choose windows that will go with what I have. In general, I love white, but would think I need something else on the house for it to relate to. Would bronze give it a nice pop? Thanks!

"lessen the impact of so much brick," This made me laugh. It's a brick house! Just how little brick should there be? :P But I understand what you meant, Restoration Decor and Consulting. I understand painting ugly brick but this brick is lovely. A classic colour and it suits the house style. I don't understand why anyone would want to paint it and add maintenance to a no-fuss material. I suspect painting perfectly fine brick is one of those upgrades that make subsequent owners curse.

The taupe cabs in your photo are pulling pink on my monitor, which makes sense -- taupe typically has pink undertones. I think the cabs look terrible against the backsplash in the inspiration photo, just blech. That said, lighting is everything, and they may look completely different in your kitchen. But if they pull pink in your space, you're going to have a devil of time with all your other choices and be really careful not to clash. Personally? I wouldn't chance it, I'd stick with the white.

Kitchen cabinets are expensive and generally don't need to be replaced more than once every 20-50 years.

Kitchens are also the heart of the home. The choices you make in the kitchen impact the design choices for the rest of the home.

Do you know your personal color palette well enough to decide that the taupe will work for your future design choices. It will need to work not only in your kitchen, but work with the wall color and other color choices for the adjoining rooms for the next 20-50 years. The taupe would work for me, as that is my neutral of choice and has been my neutral of choice for the last 30 years. I don't care for blue grays, greige (green undertones) or beige, always sticking to violet/pink undertones. My favorite colors are wine reds and purples and have been these colors since I was a teenager. Taupe works well with these choices.

White is easier to design around if you want to change your neutrals in the future.

In the last few decades we have gone through many trends, Taupe and pink beige were the nemesis of the beige and white trend, everything was orange, yellow or sometimes green beige. Designers warned us not to choose pink beige or taupe. I had pink undertoned tile at that time and Maria Killam advised me that my only choice for wall color was white. A local designer told me my only choice was to change my flooring. Neither one suggest that a Taupe or pink beige could work - they were taboo. Next we moved to blue and green grays, then to greige (gray green beige). Only after all of these trends did we move toward taupe (between violet gray and pink beige) and shortly there after we started seeing the huge interest in white. Recently I am seeing more and more people leaning toward lighter beige colors. Popular neutrals seem to change about every 10 years.

In the home that had the pink undertoned flooring I landed on a taupe as my neutral. An artist suggested it and I learned that this is the neutral that I find most attractive with all the other things I own. If I see 5 paint swatches or 5 stone choices or 5 tile colors I will always pick the taupe as my favorite. I will also pick taupe shoes, pants, jackets and shirts over beige or gray.

Knowing yourself and your likes and dislikes and how strongly you feel about colors will be the best guide. If you love the taupe and know you will love it for the next 20 years go for it.

If you have doubts or haven't defined your personal palette (the one with colors that make your heart sing) you may want to choose white and use the taupe on your walls where it can easily be changed as you go through the discovery stage of life.
