Cafe range in matte black with stainless hood?

Our old range is slowly giving up the ghost, so we're looking to replace it. Leaning toward the Cafe gas double-oven (or perhaps moving to dual-fuel). All our appliances are stainless, along with the hood. Would it be super weird to do a matte black or matte white range with everything else stainless? Our cabinets are white, and the backsplash tile has a lot of black, and both the white & black ranges have (or can have) silver knobs, etc., so perhaps it could work? The advantage of the black range is the enameled stovetop. I fear a stainless top will send my husband over the edge trying to keep it clean. Any thoughts welcome, including any advice related to Cafe range in general and/or dual-fuel vs straight-up gas.

The matte black range looks awesome next to your colorful accent tile and the black cabinet hardware. Since the black comes with the stainless handle, I think it looks fine with the ss hood. But I do think it would look better and more cohesive with the matching fridge. I see that your fridge looks brand new, so you probably won’t want to replace it so soon.

I am in a similar dilemma trying to decide whether to go with the ge matte black or matte white fridge while keeping my ss cafe range and cafe dw since they still work fine. The matte white comes with the bronze handles and to get the stainless handles is an extra $400 or so. That is not happening!

My super-high-tech photoshop skillz say it'd look something like this. Doesn't seem bad to me, but I'd love to hear other people's thoughts.

I would want stainless, but if you have to choose between white or black, I would go with black.

There was a post here a while back of someone that was quite unhappy with their white matte cafe, because it is a very blue-ish white and didn't look great with her warmer white cabinets.

You might want to take one of your cabinet doors or drawer front to an appliance store and compare to the Cafe matte white.

Gas or dual fuel might depend on what you already have available and/or if you need to upgrade your power.

I may be a little late, but we just had a Kobe hood installed over our GE Cafe. Love it. It is a model that actually sits inside the cabinet above, so all you see is a 2" "rim" coming out the bottom. It works great and looks great too - matches the stainless and since you don't see much of it, it doesn't clash at all.

We ended up delaying our project, but plan to get two individual wall units (oven and microwave) in matte white and stack them. It's quite a bit more pricey, but it also seems the individual units have better features than the combo. We're also beginning to lean more towards cabinets that have a little color, maybe green or blue. Cabinets that aren't white/grey will probably enhance the look of the matte white finish (we got the Fridge and Dishwasher in matte white already).

I did have a custom kitchen design and discussed the issue of the black sides when I purchased the refridgerator. My contractor did build it in but it still could not be built in enough to not show some edge ( about 5 inches) without making the upper cabinets look off. I do feel this is a poor design choice by GE. This is not an inexpensive appliance and spending another 350.00 per side to cover it is excessive.

I refused the delivery. I sent it back to the vendor and they say they were able to remove them. I am going to look at them next week to verify that it is removed. Don't know if anyone else had this problem. They said at the dealer that it is the way they all look. Sounded strange to me.

I agree with chispa that I think the stainless looks better. Also agree about the white - it's tough to match. Black would be fine but unless you change everything else I think it looks like you bought what was available instead of having it be an intentional choice, if that makes sense?

Personally I find enamel and stainless both require similar work when it comes to cleaning, and gas ranges are the worst choice there (I have a gas rangetop and hate cleaning it - really wish we could've done induction just for the ease of cleaning - and I cook a lot, use a wok at least every other week and I would still pick induction).

We'd talked about induction, but a friend who had an induction range said he didn't think it ever got hot enough. If that's old information, I'd be interested in hearing more!

With induction you may need to upgrade your electrical, so that would be one mark against it (similar to a dual fuel range). But for ease of cleaning it wins by a long shot.

I have never heard that induction doesn't get hot enough. My personal experience extends to an induction hob, which I used to make rice and boil water for noodles. It seemed totally fine for those tasks. My friend just finished her kitchen and put in a GE Cafe double oven induction range - she says she can't get over how quickly water boils and how responsive it is. I suggested induction to her - she didn't know about it, and they were going to run a gas line and I suggested induction instead. Her DH told me over the weekend that he's SO GLAD they didn't do that.

so regarding pot temperature - I would think that would have more to do with the type of pan you're using than the range itself, as the induction coils are just exciting the pan material; the stove itself doesn't get hot.

The only thing that doesn't function that well on induction is a wok, or other cooking that requires an open flame (smores, roasting peppers). Pretty short list.

We decided to pull the trigger and do the matte black. Fingers crossed it looks like we meant it & not like a mish-mash. Thanks for the advice & thoughts, everyone.

Hi! Could you share a photo of what it ended up looking like? I have a stainless steel vent hood and fridge and the black cafe induction is almost 400 cheaper at a local store compared to stainless steel (usually its even more expensive than the SS), so wanted to take that. But worry about mish-mashing. Thanks!
