What color shutters and door for this yellow/gold house?
Hi all - I am having a real dilemma in picking a shutter color for our house. Long term I want to paint the entire house, as I prefer cool colors and this is too warm for me. But that's not in the budget, as the interior is getting an extensive renovation before we move in. So, I am having the shutters painted and replacing the front door.
First, I am not sure what color my house really is...yellow? gold? yellowy tan? I have included several pictures so that you can see different exposures in different lights. The trim is a very creamy white (will eventually be repainted crisp white when I have the entire house painted in a few years). The roof over the bay window and the downspouts/gutters are bronze (roof is a lighter bronze due to sun exposure).
I am leaning towards black or very dark navy shutters. But I can't find many pictures of houses my color online, most yellow houses tend to be lighter in color than mine, with less brown. And I have no idea what to paint my front door. I have attached a pic of the front door we will be installing, only difference is the transom will be straight and not bowed on top.
Any and all opinions on shutter and/or door color are very much welcome! I am also open to ideas other than black and navy, I am just not terribly creative when it comes to these things so it's hard for me to come up with the possibilities. The only colors I would not want to use are red and brown.

Comments (5)Most 'greys' have an undertone and if you choose one with a blue undertone it will perfectly complement your red bricks. Don't think colour, think temperature. Comments (65)Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I just learned about a company that makes a product for staining brick that I thought you might like to know about. The company is called Masonry Cosmetics and you can buy a DIY kit for just $119 that looks like it is enough to do the front of your home. The guy emphasizes it's not a paint, so you're not going to experience any cracking or fading or peeling like you could if you whitewashed or painted the brick. What got my notice is you can lighten the brick, not just darken it! Click on their name for some before and afters. It still looks like brick - not painted brick. All the natural variations in the brick are still there! Also, to answer your question above - if your windows or wooden, they can be painted. Comments (19)The cedar and craftsman-style door and trim aren’t consistent with this house, as-is, which has more colonial elements than anything else. As for the shutters, if you’re intent on keeping them, replace them with ones that are appropriately sized for the windows, even if they’re non-functioning. (If you really like the craftsman look, then the shutters MUST go!) Alternatively, remove them altogether and beef up the window trim. And while I normally am not a fan of snap-in window grilles, I think they would give the windows some much-needed detail. Plus, depending on the configuration you choose, they’ll help to define whichever style you do decide to steer this house in, whether it be colonial or craftsman. In regards to color, with the pale yellow as the body color, a crisp white for the trim, black shutters should you choose to keep them and a charcoal roof, you’ll have infinite choices when it comes to door color, including the beautiful blues posted above and that gorgeous red jalarse used!...See More

2 years agoMaybe consider removing the shutters for now. Seems like a waste to paint and rehang, when most likely you’ll want a different color when repainting house. (That’s if there is no obvious color differece where shutters were.)
I love the color below as it’s less sharp than navy or black and more unique.
This may help if considering black.
