I would probably paint it the wallcolor of the LR if I wanted contrast, or paint it the wallcolor of the hall if I did not.

Do you not have a place for coats ? That is what I would be working on before any paint color you can barely get in the door . Is that an actul exterior door or a door from a hallway in an apartment bldg. The reason I am asking is if this is the only entry then I think you will need to be a bit picky with how much stuff can be left there . As for painting the door why not do the same color as you already have what you have in the LR that will tie in nicely to the rest of the living space . If you can rearrange the coat and boot issue then a nice piece of art will be a great addition to that space What is behind the door to the side of where the larger coats are hung?

I think black for that door would be great. I would also add a runner with all the colors of the entry way with a bit of color of the living room. So that there is a connection between the hall and the living area.

Maybe add some color? I do not care for black, primarily because it shows every scuff, every speck of dust, etc. Plus, the hall seems kind of dark already? But maybe it was night time when you took the picture. I'd also swap out the runner for something colorful. O.K. it's dead of winter where I am, so I need color right now :) . Good luck with it!

If you know your trim white, I'd start there as far as making a non-statement color. In a hall with more varied perspectives to appreciate a bold door, I wouldn't hesitate to go dark or bold. But in a long, narrow hall with tight clearances, I'd want to keep things as light and harmonious as possible. (Having two close-but-off tones adjacent would irk me, too, so good for you for dialing in on a fix.)

Do you know your trim paint color? I'd start there and give that a try first before going darker just to see if that resolves the dissonance to your eye. Hope that helps--cheers!

Palimpsest - 2 great ideas! I'm not a fan of black and reds together, so maybe the simplest solution is just to go with the trim colour. Also I just realized that walking by the red adjacent living room while looking at a black door might also bother me 😬

Patricia, we have no storage for coats or boots except for a small closet behind where I took the long view photo and the kids wouldn't be able to reach the hangers. We might look into cutting into the living room (if it's not a supporting wall) to create a built-in, long term. I think i'll do the door in the trim colour. Thanks for your comment 🙂

I agree with trim color or wall color. Trim color is probably better If you plan on repainting the walls in a different color in the future. I love a black door, but not in this hallway. Best of luck!

While you are at it, get a new mirror, and add pendants to replace the recessed lights.

I love black doors, but, not in your hallway. Paint it the trim color. Can you put a lower hanging rod in the closet you mentioned above, so that the kids can reach to hang their jackets, etc. Maybe also a shoe and boot rack in the closet
