IMO no laminate next to real wood there is no reason to have the same wood in a bedroom but it is nice and of course you can change direction of the planks and in your case would make sense since finding the same plank size is an issue I think keeping the same species would make stining the new floor to match the rest a lot easier too.

I would keep it going in tg3 same direction. Real wood to match what is there now.

You CAN do any of the above. If it were me:

Change direction: yes

Change species: no

Change width: yes

Laminate: hell no

All the bedrooms in my house have oak floors that run perpendicular to the hallways. I love how it looks and there have been no issues in 40 years.

just get the 2 1/4 oak (or even a 3" would be fine) and have it stained on site. even if it's a tad darker or lighter, it will still work because it's the same species.

call in a wood flooring specialist. Heck, do something cool like a herringbone layout w/the same oak.

slightly larger than what you have, but this would certainly work. same species, same tone.

here's 2 1/4" red oak with more of a natural color. i'm sure they could match your honey color.

I am far from a floor expert, but... whether or not you can change the direction of the floor depends on your subfloor. Flooring needs to run perpendicular to joists on most floors. You can stiffen the floor from above or below to change that, but you shouldn't assume you can change direction.

My opinion on your questions...

1. It depends on your subfloor.

2. I would consider different tones if you are going to change the wood species. You generally want to avoid any chance of it looking like you were trying to match and failed.

3. If you are going to match, match as much as you can. If you are not going to match, make it distinctively different.

4. Many engineered products can look good next to hardwood, but you are going to have to spend extra. So unless there is a compelling reason not to, stick with hardwood.

Having said this. It is your house and my answers may not work so great for you.

If you purchase unfinished flooring, you can have it stained to match. Your flooring pro can show you a sample before the work is done, so you will know what you're getting.

You can purchase 2 1/4 inch unfinished flooring at a real flooring store. It might be hard to get at a Home Depot, Lowes or Menards, but you can probably even find it there.

Please don't do laminate. Please don't even say that word while you are in a room next to the real hardwood.

Menards here carries unfinished oak planks.

Thank you all very helpful. Will definitely stay with hardwood oak and 2-1/4. Checking on the direction. We’d like to change it bc the room is longer than wide. Will check the joists and subfloor.
