We have moisture issues so couldn't do wood (plus, we live on a ranch and hubby works around heavy machinery ALOT...our floors take a real beating!)...so, we went with travertine in most of the downstairs (we put *super* cushy carpet in the side tv room). I LOVE MY TRAVERTINE! It never looks dirty. We laid it in a three size versailles pattern which gives an "old world" style feel to the house. It's indestructible and everything cleans up perfectly...even spilled paint. We carried the travertine up the stairs...only on the riser part of the stairs..used the ultra cushy carpet on the step part. Kitchen was done in a dark porcelain tile with texture...also love it..never looks dirty, isn't slippery, cleans up so easily! Yes, the floors are hard. I just wear good shoes/slippers and no worries.

My dad loves parquet. I am not a huge fan but I don't hate it. Seems like it often elicits a love or hate response in some folks. I would be worried about that only if resale was going to be an issue in the future not too far off. Otherwise, you have lots of options, maybe even hardwood laid over the tiles? I'd check to see if that was possible. There is something to be said for a small house with uniform hardwood floors throughout, I think it is a great way to go if the house is small. Other options are cork (my brother did this) or linoleum, although I think cork would be better on the feet. It seemed like kind of a pain to install, but he likes it.

Thank you for helping me settle this. I really appreciate it. I too felt that it was a strong piece which did not have a place in the master bedroom suite. I really like using antique furniture for the bathroom. Thank you for helping me follow my instinct to have the buffet left by the first owner refinished. It has a farmhouse feel and it weighs a ton. I like the idea of having a higher sink vanity in order to avoid bending down so far. I hear vanities are being built higher which makes sense to me. A friend has 750 sq feet of travertine (don't need all of it and will have to be filled, sealed, and polished which would do well for shower walls) with interesting decorative tile around. The wood floors can be left and only need to be refinished. I so love the idea of copper sinks and the buffet (perfect length, height, and depth) with decorative tile possibly copper. I agree that your best option is to find an installer who will install new Douglas-fir and then finish it to come as close as possible to your other floors. When it's brand new, it will look different - but then it will darken as it ages. My 1920 bungalow also has Doug-fir floors throughout the first story. I had to replace 3 planks in the living room a few years ago but didn't want to replace the entire floor. Those 3 new planks stood out (brighter) than the rest of the floor for about 2-3 years before they darkened to match the rest of the floor. (I refinished the entire floor at the same time I replaced those planks.) In my kitchen, the fir was shot (like in yours), and like you, I didn't want cold, hard tile. However, my situation was different because we already had underfloor radiant heat, so wood (especially fir) was not the best option. We ended up installing LVT in a warm color scheme that complements the fir in the rest of the house. It's soft, warm, and durable - I have no regrets.
