Family lore that isn't true!

last modified: 4 years ago

For all of my young life I was told we were descended from Pocohontas. Nope. Not a drop of native American blood. Oh well, at least we were descended from Meriwether Lewis. My uncle's middle name was Meriwether in Mr. Lewis's honor. It seems Meriwether Lewis was never married and had no children.

My mother inherited (and I from her) a beautiful solid walnut buffet which had doors that didn't match. The reason for that was because in Lexington, Missouri when the Union Army invaded the town, the buffet door was kicked in by a Union soldier searching for whiskey when he broke into my great-grandparents' home. A few years ago I was at my cousin's house and she was telling me why the doors of her old buffet didn't match. It seems a Union soldier broke into our great -grandparents' house and kicked in the buffet door . . .

I'd love to hear your family stories that didn't turn out to be true.
