2 years agoPicture of the layout. The design software isn't true to color. Picture of the cabinet choices.
We were initially interested in the laurent counter (black with brown/copper veins) but are now concerned about it being too sophisticated looking. so we are looking at the entzo color counter.

Comments (20)"Would switching the sink/DW and stove/30" base be okay?" No. The range should be in the most protected part of the Kitchen, not the busiest. Where I put the sink will be the busiest part of the Kitchen, especially if you cannot move the hall doorway. The corner will be the least busy/most protected area. Corner sinks limit access to them. It's not usually a problem with a range b/c only one person usually works at them. However, with a sink, you can often have two people trying to use it and, when it's in a corner, that becomes an issue. Also, corner sinks can be problematical when it comes to placing the DW. You have to be sure you have enough space between the sink and the DW to be able to stand at the sink while the DW is open, usually 12" to 18". So on the Mudroom wall, it would have to be sink, then 18" cabinet, then 24" DW, then 1" support wall, then 1.5" counter overhang. There isn't enough room for all of that on the Mudroom wall. Putting the DW b/w the range and sink is another thing that should be avoided, if possible. It limits how many people can be working in the Kitchen because now your Cleanup Zone and Prep Zone are one in the same...one person can be prepping -OR- one person can be cleaning up or unloading the DW. It can also be unpleasant to work over a running DW. You are also limited in the size of the sink basin. It needs to fit in the cabinet without compromising the integrity of the sink base (or voiding the warranty if you hack it). It can often be forced farther back than recommended to get a decent size sink. If you are planning an apron sink, you may need even more space in the corner, which would cause you to lose more cabinet space. GWer Marandall did a 30"W corner apron sink and she needed 52" on each wall of the corner, not counting the space b/w the sink and DW. The corner range takes around 48" on each side and there's no worrying about space for an accessible DW next to it. "Then I could eliminate the wall oven entirely and go with a microwave hood that we have today." I would stay away from an OTR MW, they are lousy hoods and, at best, mediocre MWs. You will be much better off with a true range hood and a separate MW. I understand you have one now, but why not improve on what you have if you're going to spend all the $$ on a remodel. If you just want a range and don't need a second oven, you could hang the MW on a shelf under the uppers/over the counter on the "back" wall next to the refrigerator, create a Tea/Coffee & Snack Center, and even add an 18" pantry cabinet (assuming you want one). (Or, get a MW drawer - I love mine!) A standard MW on a shelf can easily and inexpensively be replaced when it dies, unlike an OTR MW. You never did say whether you could move the Hallway door. I’ve attached a few photos.. there are actually three openings to different rooms in the house.. one goes into a hallway with a powder room and mud room, other into a breakfast area/den and the other into the dining room(not shown)..I would like to be able to cornered appliance placement (fridge and range) and to make room for a larger island.. looking to replace with white shaker cabinets. Comments (4)Great kitchen. I'm excited to see how it evolves. The current counters are dark and the room looks very light. I don't see how soapstone will darken the look. Soapstone comes in many colors though, are you thinking blacker or more grey? Also, what are the light sources next to the kitchen? It looks very bright, especially given the dark ceiling and only two lights. Where is the rest of the light coming from? A few simple steps to update: New cabinet hardware - no cup handles. New lighting and stools. Remove corner appliance garage, it looks dated. Make updates to existing hood or get a new one. I'm not suggesting that any of these inspiration pics below are what you want to do but there are some good lessons to take from each of them that could apply to your space. I like that the wood is limited to the ceiling. You may want to consider painting the wood on your walls and just keeping the ceiling unpainted wood. Limiting soapstone to just the island could get you the countertop material you like without darkening the whole room. The bold contrast of the white with large black hardware is very attention grabbing and would certainly guide the eye away from any country charm details of your current kitchen. Do you want to keep the ceiling all wood, or paint it all except for the beams? Some people feel very strongly about painting wood. Don't know what camp you are in. Also notice that these cabinets have a very glossy finish so even though they are a dark color, the reflect and bounce the light around. I'm not suggesting you paint your cabinets granny smith apple green. But this is a good example of how you can think outside the box and break the mold in a cabin kitchen. Lastly, I immediately thought of a Whitney Parkinson kitchen when I heard modernize and soapstone. I think this kitchen nails it as far as having a few traditional elements yet looking very contemporary. Comments (4)I like the countertop with the backsplash and seems to go ok with the island wood choice. However on my screen, the odd man out is the white cabinet. It is because the cabinet has a warm creamy tone (it reads yellow) which makes the counter and backsplash read slightly pink. So the Vanilla color really clashes imho. I would choose a different white paint color for the cabinets. Something that is more of a neutral or cool white. Nothing in the yellow family. Congrats on your new home!...See MoreBuehl
