Have you ever been offered a promotion you weren’t looking for?

I am at an age where my work life is kind of winding down. My husband and I owned and ran a large dog training and care facility. We sold our place and moved to this vacation town a few years ago. My husband is 16 years older than I so he is already retired. When we moved up here I was retired as well, but that lasted about 6 months. I took a part time job at the local Tractor Supply to keep busy. Generally a fun job and discounts on all my pet supplies. After only about 2 1/2 months there I got promoted to one of the managers, which I saw as a challenge as I had never worked in retail at all. So I jumped back into full-time and all was good. Unlike a lot of the youngsters there I had no aspirations to take the corprate train to a higher up level in corporate, so was quite fine doing my thing. And then Covid hit. Since TSC is a feed store, it is considered essential and therefore we kept working. However, I am in an area where people don’t believe in precautions and such so we had coworkers constantly out with covid and we had customers who would get nasty with employees about wearing masks or social distancing. We would also get verbal abuse when we were out of products and such. So anyway, I had enough one day and just walked out(I have never done anything like that!)

I took a mental health break for about a month and then started looking for work again. I ended up getting hired at an animal hospital to be a front desk rep. A good fit for my animal experience and my prior life as a corprate travel specialist(unlike many of the younger group, I have no trouble talking on the phone lol).

So here it is 5+ months in and the supervisor of my department is stepping down. She is not leaving the practice, she just decided she’s not cut out to be a supervisor. One of the parts of the job is dealing with angry customers, which she ended up passing on to me most of the time. She is going to take a position in the kennel and will have minimal contact with the clients. The hospital manager hinted to me a few weeks ago that this was a probability and said she’d like me to take the position. I basically answered by laughing it off. The other 5 people in the department have all been there 4,5,6 years or so. I figured one of them would want the spot for sure. Well, dontcha know, the only person who applied is the one employee the hospital manager absolutely doesn’t want in the job. She is part time because she has kids who are heavily involved in sports and spends all of her free time driving kids to practices and games all over the state, plus she has never worked Saturdays due to this. All that aside, she does know the procedures of the computer system better than anyone, but she breaks policy constantly. I get why the HM doesnt want her to be the supervisor. So this past week, the HM asked me a few times if I was serious about not wanting the position. She told me to name my terms, and that the medical director was in agreement and had approved her offering me the position. By the end of the week I finally told her I’d think about it over the weekend. So here I sit, trying to decide.

On a side note, when this all started, the girl who wants the job asked me point blank if I was going to apply. I told her no, and she asked why(the rest of the team was right there during this exchange) and I told her I’d been there, done that. I was enjoying being a soldier instead of a captain. So I’m pretty sure if I get the job she will be impossible, she does seem to lead the little clique. Another reason the HM wants me for the job, I keep my nose to the grindstone and stay out of office drama. I’m also thinking she may just quit.

My friends from the real world(my little core group for over 20 years) are all about me taking the job. But we are always each other’s cheerleaders in these situations lol
