Hi Linda, Thank you so much for that info. I have 2 questions for you. If I can get you some better pictures (I know this one is kind of dark), could you give me some more info? And how would I get you thoses pictures as it seems this site will only allow you to post 1 picture. And the 2nd question, and PLEASE don't take this the wrong way, but what qualifies you to know antiques and chairs such as mine? Being I am not familiar with this site, and don't know you or your credentials, I just want to know. Believe me, I am not being a wiseguy. Thanks again for your help and I should be able to post better pictures this coming weekend.

Okay, just talking through my hat here ... While the base seems to be original Wiliam IV, I'm not so sure about the top. I wonder if what you have is a married piece, made up of parts from two or three other tables. Here's my reasoning: The base has good, thick veneer and parallel saw marks, and looks very typical of the style. It's pegged, or at least has plugs over the screws. The nice bun feet are true to William IV. But tables of this era didn't have a turned plate for the connection between the top and column -- at least not that I've seen. The joint would usually look quite a bit more structural, kind of like the interior of a house wall, with bracing and brackets, etc., to keep it stable. I wonder if the column and turned plate came from another piece, possible a candle stand. The top has a shape consistent with the base, but the way the skirt is attached doesn't look right. I would not expect to see exposed screws here, but rather a glued joint with blocks behind it. I also think the skirt would be a little deeper. Could this be the top from another table, cut down to mimic the shape of the base, and with a skirt added? Whether this is the case or not, it is certainly a lovely piece. I agree with calliope: Get it to an appraiser. And not just someone who deals in antiques, but someone who knows furniture from this period.

I went to a couple of local stores today, just randomly chosen because they looked like they would carry formal dining furniture (Walter E. Smithe, Thomasville, and Drexel Heritage). As I expected no one had oak (except for mission which stylistically will not go with my china cabinet). So I looked for woods that were the right reddish brown color, which turned out to be, for the most part, mahogany. What I saw in all of these stores seemed to be really nice quality but I did experience sticker shock. (More from the price of the chairs than the tables: is $300 and up per chair normal? ArghÂ) I realize I havenÂt shopped for much furniture; when our kids were small utility ruled, and most of my good pieces are family antiques that I refinished myself. Subtracting the styles that wouldnÂt go and ones with distressing (I donÂt like distressing, at least not on a formal dining table), that left really only 2 tables found in 4 stores, one by Henredon and one by Thomasville. All of the stores said they had few styles on display but could order anything from the manufacturer. However ordering was what I didnÂt want to do, since I want to see the wood and workmanship close up. If I have to order anyway I might as well do it online. I have read about people on these forums ordering online but I have been concerned about getting something that is not the quality I am imagining. Are there any brands or vendors in particular I should look for, so I will not be disappointed? Thanks for any advice you can offer.
