Double digit birthday cake

Yes, it's true. One of the Princesses in Training has had her 10th birthday. (sigh)

I asked what kind of birthday cake. Plain vanilla. Really? Plain vanilla? Yes, but could I make it look like the galaxy, please? Oh, and she also wanted a skateboard with the galaxy printed on it. She kindly pointed it out to me on Amazon, just to make it easier for me, LOL.

I dug out my Hot Milk Cake that Pixistix posted here years ago and went to work. I don't know if anyone else remembers Pixistix, but she was a baker, she'd been to the Pillsbury Bake Off Finals three times, I think, although she didn't win. Anyway, she made one of my favorite cakes, so "plain vanilla" it was. It was the same cake I made when Elery and I got married, our wedding cake, so I'm a little extra fond of it.

I made 3 layers and put homemade strawberry jam between the layers, for a little extra flavor. It seemed like a bad time to experiment with a new technique or I would have used the poured mirro glaze that looks so cool. Then I got out my black food color and checked YouTube and got to work. This is the result:

it was really good, once I got past the black frosting and everyone that had cake smiled afterward and it looked really terrible, LOL.

Happy Birthday, Madison!

YA'LLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!! The point is serving cake on THE STACKED PLATES! I learned it here on the forum from you!!!! You can have one in 5 minutes (cake not included) if you have the plates, candle holders, skinny vases. Ya'll saw chocolate and forgot how we can live larger for less. We are blessed. Our guests will think we are THE ACE OF CAKES if we use our stacked plates this way. Am I standing here with toilet paper stuck to my shoe again????? Have ya'll been making cakes forever and stacking them on the stacked plates????? OMG (grimmiced the newbie who just fell off the turnip truck). OK-OK-OK "Let them eat cake!" I'll just go off somewhere and invent the wheel. What's that you say??? Been there, done that????? LOLOLOLOL That's a good one! I never heard that before. Yuk Yuk Yuk susie

Hi everyone, Sorry I've ebeen AWOL for awhile. Spring is always such a busy time. I've been trying to get the yard & gardens cleaned up. DH is expecting to start a new job in a couple of weeks, its suppose to pay about twice as much. He'll be driving OTR again with only one day home per week so we're trying to get stuff here taken care of beforehand (building GH, fixing stuff, etc).He gave his current job his 2 wk notice just 2 days ago and they called today letting him go (on his day off)! Now we're really hoping the new job is as good as it sounds!! I got the last of my WS potted yesterday. Out of 160+ jugs there were only about 15-20 that didn't sprout...not bad I guess for my first WS attempt. I'm waiting for my BIL to till my new gardens so I can plant stuff...alot of my potted seedlings have bloomed! Bluebonnets, Lacy Phacelia, and Nasturtiums of every color! I hope they're still blooming by the time I get them in the gardens! Kym, thanks for sending the May list in advance! At least I won't get behind on that! LOL I'm fine with recieving emails from forum members...sounds like you have an interesting game up your sleeve. Count me in! I hope all April Bday buddies are having a wonderful BDay month!!!!! Thank you everyone! I love the cooking forum and cooking itself (you should have seen lunch today: roast beef with onions and baby carrots, instant mashed potatoes and gravy, YUM! Mom did that meal as usual. She cooked the roast, onions and potatoes in the crock pot) but one of my other passions, gardening, is starting to gear up for the year though I devote my time to each. You may remember that I got the novel "Fried Green Tomatoes At The Whistle Stop Cafe" for my birthday too. I can't wait to try some of those recipes! You all know how fond I am of fried green tomatoes :). It seems I've activated everyone's sweet tooth lol. I did have a wonderful birthday (I'll remember it for a long, long time). Thank you everyone! black food coloring doesn't digest well. things turn black down there, not brown ... and it is scary if you are unprepared ... ask me how I know ...

Bragu, sounds like the time that I had to warn all of DD’s little friends’ mothers about the very blue Cookie Monster cupcakes I served at her birthday party!

Annie, that is sooooo cool. DGS is obsessed with planes, rockets, and all things even vaguely aviation related. He may get a galaxy caked for his b’day! I can guarantee it won’t look as good as yours, though!

Annie, that's perfect. What a great and adventuresome grandma you are! Of course I'd have a piece and can imagine myself with a black tongue for the rest of the day. Not a good look on someone my age though.

Thanks, everyone. It was actually a lot easier than I expected but that black frosting, LOL, it caused every problem that was mentioned!

LindaC, here's the recipe. The trick is to beat the eggs for a long time, I go for at least 5 minutes. Otherwise the cake is dense, although still good.

Hot Milk Cake - Pixistix
Old fashioned, simple, melts in your mouth!
4 eggs
2 cups sugar
2 1/4 cups flour
2 1/4 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/4 cups milk
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
Beat eggs and sugar well (I beat about 5 minutes, for the "loft"). Combine flour with baking powder and add to egg mixture along with vanilla. Heat milk and butter together until butter melts; gradually add to batter, beating until well blended.

Pour batter into a greased 9x13 pan. Bake at 350 for 30 to 35 minutes. (I actually bake at 325F, it takes a little longer but the cake doesn't get as brown and seems to stay more moist)

This also makes an awesome strawberry shortcake and is sturdy enough to hold up fondant if you're playing with that particular medium.

Your cake immediately made me think Vincent van Gogh’s painting, Starry Starry Night.

you did a beautiful job. I know its not the ” Happy Birthday” song but playing Starry Starry Night song by Don McLean in the background a nice touch too.

Thanks, shirl. Instead, Elery was playing the Theme to Star Trek, LOL. It wasn't Happy Birthday either, but it was fun!
