Yes, it's true. One of the Princesses in Training has had her 10th birthday. (sigh)

I asked what kind of birthday cake. Plain vanilla. Really? Plain vanilla? Yes, but could I make it look like the galaxy, please? Oh, and she also wanted a skateboard with the galaxy printed on it. She kindly pointed it out to me on Amazon, just to make it easier for me, LOL.

I dug out my Hot Milk Cake that Pixistix posted here years ago and went to work. I don't know if anyone else remembers Pixistix, but she was a baker, she'd been to the Pillsbury Bake Off Finals three times, I think, although she didn't win. Anyway, she made one of my favorite cakes, so "plain vanilla" it was. It was the same cake I made when Elery and I got married, our wedding cake, so I'm a little extra fond of it.

I made 3 layers and put homemade strawberry jam between the layers, for a little extra flavor. It seemed like a bad time to experiment with a new technique or I would have used the poured mirro glaze that looks so cool. Then I got out my black food color and checked YouTube and got to work. This is the result:

it was really good, once I got past the black frosting and everyone that had cake smiled afterward and it looked really terrible, LOL.

Thank you everyone! I love the cooking forum and cooking itself (you should have seen lunch today: roast beef with onions and baby carrots, instant mashed potatoes and gravy, YUM! Mom did that meal as usual. She cooked the roast, onions and potatoes in the crock pot) but one of my other passions, gardening, is starting to gear up for the year though I devote my time to each. You may remember that I got the novel "Fried Green Tomatoes At The Whistle Stop Cafe" for my birthday too. I can't wait to try some of those recipes! Yes, 4. It's hard for me to believe too. (sigh) The older I get, the faster the time goes, it seems, funny how Chase and I have that in common. (grin) Sharon, I thought about selling cakes, then decided that I really just want to play with flour and fondant. I want to see a picture or think of something and make that, and I don't want to deal with some spoiled bride complaining that a ruffle is 1/16th of an inch lower on one side so she doesn't have to pay me. I've had a couple of people ask right after I made the birch bark wedding cake, but decided I just don't want to deal with the inevitable hassle, or the problems with transporting and setting up some of those elaborate concoctions. Coconut, I'm glad to see you here! Yes, Makayla is a big help, and she's far more artistic than I am, so she's good at things like painting gold lustre dust on those mermaid tails and making fondant seaweed. When the kids get those ideas, though, I don't hesitate to say "I can't do that". They promptly come up with something else. And if I try it and it doesn't work, I do something else and they're always fine with it. It's cake, after all... Ellen, cake and buttercream frosting and fondant and M&Ms and ice cream. Yeah. It's their parents' problem. (snicker) Cindy Mac, Maci is adorable in appearance, she's fierce in behavior, trust me. She's the youngest and the loudest of all the grandkids. Dcarch, they did indeed, eat cake. No leftovers for me to deal with, double bonus. Colleen, a lot of my cakes are your chocolate cake recipe, the texture is "right" for holding up decorations! Kathy, your Beau/Lily must be getting nearly as big as Makayla. It's hard to believe. Annie

Coincidentally, I've been thinking about cake mixes...on another thread I wrote about making cupcakes for my grandson's birthday. I was just going to buy plain cupcakes and embellish them, because I want some vanilla, chocolate and need some # of gluten free. So I am really not up to making 3 batches of cupcakes (mostly because I hate the clean up in between batches). But then I realized I'd have to get unfrosted premade cupcakes from the bakery and I thought, sheesh, how lazy is that, buying cupcakes then frosting and decorating on my own. I can just whip out the plain cupcakes. A MIX, I'll use a MIX. Then I started searching on this forum for people's favorites and found this thread. And there are some references on the internet to TJ's having cake mixes, but I can't find out if they still do. Does anyone know? I love their pumpkin bread mix and buy a few boxes to last when they pull their seasonal stuff.

That looks absolutely like "the galaxy." The mirror glazes look great but I suspect there is a learning curve!

black food coloring doesn't digest well. things turn black down there, not brown ... and it is scary if you are unprepared ... ask me how I know ...

Bragu, sounds like the time that I had to warn all of DD’s little friends’ mothers about the very blue Cookie Monster cupcakes I served at her birthday party!

Annie, that is sooooo cool. DGS is obsessed with planes, rockets, and all things even vaguely aviation related. He may get a galaxy caked for his b’day! I can guarantee it won’t look as good as yours, though!

Annie, that's perfect. What a great and adventuresome grandma you are! Of course I'd have a piece and can imagine myself with a black tongue for the rest of the day. Not a good look on someone my age though.

Thanks, everyone. It was actually a lot easier than I expected but that black frosting, LOL, it caused every problem that was mentioned!

LindaC, here's the recipe. The trick is to beat the eggs for a long time, I go for at least 5 minutes. Otherwise the cake is dense, although still good.

Hot Milk Cake - Pixistix
Old fashioned, simple, melts in your mouth!
4 eggs
2 cups sugar
2 1/4 cups flour
2 1/4 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/4 cups milk
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
Beat eggs and sugar well (I beat about 5 minutes, for the "loft"). Combine flour with baking powder and add to egg mixture along with vanilla. Heat milk and butter together until butter melts; gradually add to batter, beating until well blended.

Pour batter into a greased 9x13 pan. Bake at 350 for 30 to 35 minutes. (I actually bake at 325F, it takes a little longer but the cake doesn't get as brown and seems to stay more moist)

This also makes an awesome strawberry shortcake and is sturdy enough to hold up fondant if you're playing with that particular medium.

Your cake immediately made me think Vincent van Gogh’s painting, Starry Starry Night.

you did a beautiful job. I know its not the ” Happy Birthday” song but playing Starry Starry Night song by Don McLean in the background a nice touch too.

Thanks, shirl. Instead, Elery was playing the Theme to Star Trek, LOL. It wasn't Happy Birthday either, but it was fun!
