kitchen lighting dilemma - pendants or recessed over island
Comments (5)Your concerns are very valid, and there is absolutely no need to have pendant lighting if you have can lighting there. I'm from a family of tall people and really understand wanting the upper visual space to feel open. Keep the extra light you've added. It's always safer to have extra light than to miss it, and you can put those lights on dimmers to adjust the levels to the need of the moment....See MoreDesign Dilemma: 2 or 3 Pendant Lights Over Off Centered Island???
Comments (12)IMO the space is very crowded and not a good work space . I don't even think sinks need to be at windows since we spend so little time at sinks if we use out DWs properly and to place a sink to look out at the great room really makes no sense . If the stools are in use there is no way to access the stuff behing them all the walkways are too small . Are you an actual KD or just an ID Kitchen design begins with function and clients need to be guided by that function . Often clients need to be told when something they want will just not work.IMo first fix the function then worry about the pendants ....See Moretrying to figure out how many pendant light to put over kitchen island

Comments (5)I'm confused again! You mention 5 x 11', which I took to be your island, but in your drawing it looks more like 6'. I'm showing you ideas more in keeping with your drawing. Guidelines on pendant lighting for islands are: end lights are at least 6" in from the edge, lights are 30-32" apart, and hung 30-36" above the island. With your high ceiling you would go toward the higher end. (I did not establish that each of these lights could be hung from the height of your beam, but you would need to be sure of that when considering lights.) Your inspo lights are nice. In my kitchen they wouldn't work because I don't like the glare of bare bulbs or the constant cleaning needed with clear glass. I would prefer lighting that did not emphasize the lack of symmetry in the cabinets beyond the island.
