Small master bathroom and closet design challenge, please help!
Comments (4)I just finished an addition to my twenties home. I tried everything to get a bath and closet with in a 13 x8 ft space but everything felt cramped and instead of having a tight closet and a tight bath with small shower and vanity we decided to add wardrobes to or large bath. I wanted custom but due to an unexpected health issue we scaled back budget and went with IKEA pax wardrobes they hold all of my most worn seasonal clothes and all of my husbands work clothes plus most worn casual wear. I like the reach in better for organization too. We still have the orginal reach in closet and a pine older armoire for extra items in the bedroom but never open it. Could you add wardrobes in the bedroom and have a nice sized bath with additional storage? I really love my large bath after years in this old house with tiny baths and closets. I was unconventional and like keeping my clothes in the bath which has two venting fans. it is my most private from the street area in my room so it is where I change anyway but the wardrobes take up so little space I could have placed them in the bedroom without losing much floor space too. in your second plan you can turn the vanity and make it longer and have the edge abut the shower with a half glass panel and than the door.......See MoreSkylight over bathroom vanity?
Comments (46)JK, do you have a vaulted ceiling in this bathroom, so that your ceiling is right near the roof, like in Beth's photo? (Beth, I love your plant wall!) Or is yours more an 8 or 9 ft ceiling , with the roof several feet higher? If it is, there will be a well - a walled tunnel like in Jolene's comment from June 24 - and you won't be seeing much out of the skylight anyway. We added a skylight to our dark kitchen when we had it remodeled in 2010, and it was the best choice we made in the whole remodel. The well was made very big at the bottom so that the light spreads out into the room. I would guess that the skylight is 3 to 4 feet higher than the ceiling, in my case. In no way have I ever looked up at the sky to see the weather or for any other reason. There really is nothing you can see through the skylight....See MoreBathroom dust and how feasible is a DIY bathroom remodel for me?
Comments (20)I got the cabinets through Home Depot (20% off) they are not higher end but they have held up extremely well and we’ve been happy with them. I don’t remember the brand, but the color is cognac on maple. They’re standard kitchen cabinets. We got 2 regular drawer banks, 1 extra wide drawer bank, 2 sink cabinets and the closet you can see in the picture for about 1800 w/the discount. We bumped the shower wall 6 inches into the bedroom to make the shower bigger, pulled the cabinets out from the wall a couple of inches to provide more counter top. And curved the edge the counter for interest. Just for fun, this is what we had to start with. The tub was rusted and there were two doors, 1 from the hall & 1 from the master bedroom, we closed up the hall door. I think we got our moneys worth. LOL As for the labor, I found my Contractor through a plumber I had hired to put in a kitchen faucet. I asked if he had someone good he could refer and he referred Matt to me. Matt had his own company but just him and his guys. All of his work was by word of mouth, he didn’t advertise or push for business, he didn’t need to. I think I got fair pricing from him because he didn’t have the overhead a lot of the larger companies might have. He wasn’t the least expensive and he wasn’t the most expensive. Finding someone who was willing to work on our schedule and not having to have it done ASAP is what really helped me to be able to keep our costs at a minium for both labor and materials....See MoreHelp with updating 50's bathroom - pink tile challenge
Comments (19)swiss coffee sounds like it would be so pretty with that tile! post pics! if you still think the pink is too much, consider a pretty shower curtain that's closed all the time. one other suggestion (and I might get some flak for it here on houzz): if it's just the wall tile that bothers you, you can have it reglazed. a good company will do this with multiple layers of epoxy, clear coat, etc, so it's super tough. a side bonus is the old grout will be sealed. I wouldn't recommend this for a tub, but for wall tiles it should hold up pretty well. with close inspection, it won't look as real as normal tile and grout, but if you hate the pink tile, it would be an improvement. I find that white gives the most realistic looking outcome. FWIW: I like the pink tile though!...See MoreOlychick
