silver polish on the blade of sterling knives
Comments (4)Ah! Ha!...you used one of those dips....that's not silver polish...that works by a chemical reaction. I have been preaching for years both on this forum and to about everyone I see.....don't ever ever use that stuff!! Try "real silver polish" on your knives....like Wrights or International Silver polish...the kind you have to rub...see if that helps. If that doesn't work, try Simichrome....only on the blades of the knives. Taking them to a jeweler is definitly a hassle but considering you have ruined knives worth about $50 each...or more, it seems like the only thing to do if the other methods don't work. I am afraid that no polishing will really help, that the black is caused by a chemical reaction and the only thing to do will be to replace the blades on the knives. Please....never EVER use any of those dip methods on your silverware. Linda C...See MoreWhich silver polish?
Comments (11)Wright's silver cream in the white plastic tub with the navy blue lid. You can get it at the grocery store. You use it with the enclosed sponge, and wash it off...much easier on hands with problems (I have badly arthritic thumbs and lots of old silver). Three caveats, and one suggestion...never soak silver in the same water as stainless, or in a stainless bowl. The water makes the two metals react in a way that damages silver...and that includes silver table knives, which almost always have stainless blades. Never soak flatware that has hollow handles (most knives, some serving pieces, and some pitchers). And always make sure the silver is perfectly dry before you put it away. I rinse with very hot water, let it air dry, but not long, and then dry it with a plain cotton dish towel. Then I usually leave it out for the rest of the day or overnight. Moisture is the enemy! The suggestion? Use your silver all the time. The more you use it, and wash afterwards, the less you have to polish it, and the better the patina over time. Didn't know you were going to get grandmother's lecture, did you!...See MorePolishing Silver
Comments (4)I use Silver wipes to polish it up. Wet the cloth, wipe, rinse well and dry. Here are the one I use.https://www.amazon.com/Connoisseurs-Silver-Wipes-10-Count/dp/B000RB5SAE/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1486753835&sr=8-3&keywords=silver+wipes...See MoreSilver Polish Problem
Comments (12)I am gathering that none of you has seen this yellowing and that it is therefore unique to me and my polishes. I am just noticing that this may be a lighting effect. In evening electric light and down in my hand, a piece of my Rogers Bros. Remembrance set appears more blackish and I can see that the tarnish can partially be removed onto my hand. I suppose tarnish is always removable in that manner but I wasn't paying attention since I didn't appear to have problems before. I said I took my coffee/tea set DOWN because it is displayed on top of a china cabinet. Perhaps the yellow/orange is most obvious in sunlight viewed from below. I will move things around and see if I can learn anything about lighting effects. I think the only regular polish available here would be Wright's. I guess unless someone suggests something else, that I will get some and date my next polish session....See More3katz4me
