Kitchen cabinet brands... not having good luck making decisions
Comments (18)Colorfast- sorry... I meant to get back to you to ask about your kitchen mess! Anyway- yes, manufactured quartz. Chopped-up quartz bonded together by the polymer resin. Senator13- I looked the Schrock and Showplace cabinets over pretty thoroughly. Checked the load weights, warranties, etc. Brought samples home. They really did appear to be very similar & well-constructed... it was just by intuition that I settled on the Schrock. I also liked the Kraftmaid... but not quite as well. I sure as heck hope I'm not wrong!! Also- the kitchen is not *that* low-end. LOL It's just not 'high-end'. We're under 40' for counter space, so the Cambria is affordable. I've lived my entire life with the most awful laminate counters and floors, and decided that in my old age, I was going to have a nice kitchen. Small, but nice. Aries61.. about pricing out cabinets.... It feels like buying a car. The closest I could get to an individual cabinet price from 4 places was that 'cabinets run approx. $330/linear foot'. I will not have the price break-out until I put down a deposit and order them. Does that make me crazy? Yes. Is that the way it was at Lowe's, HD and 2 kitchen designers? Yes. All the prices seemed to fall into the same ballpark. Having said that... gulp... it came out to $8500 [inc. tax] for almost 28 ft. [linear] of cabinets. [That means top and bottom cabs.] [One wall is 11' inc. corner, around to another 8', another wall of 8'.] Oh- the Cambria + sink will be about $2700. Oh, no- I better stop. Now I'm so anxious that having said that, people will crawl out of the woodwork to shake their heads and tell me I'm completely crazy & have over-spent. I'm already shaking all the time!...See Moredecisions, decisions... layout help please!
Comments (12)How shallow is your shallow pantry? 12"? With overlay doors, that makes it 13" deep. If you're using 24" deep cabinets, your island will be 27" wide, not 24" because of the counter overhang (standard 1.5" on all sides). Even a CD fridge will extend beyond the counters 3-4". A standard depth (SD) fridge can extend into the aisle as much as 10" beyond your perimeter counters. You wrote that you don't like to shop. Are you okay with the reduced storage space a CD fridge offers? So for your 12' wide room, you need to factor in a 27" island, a 13" deep pantry cab, a 30" fridge (inc. box, door required air space behind it, not handles) to know how much aisle space you'll really have. 144" (12' width) 30" (CD fridge, with required air space behind it and door, not handles) 27" island 13" pantry cab (12" depth plus 1" for door) ---- 74" left over for aisles or 37" for each aisle That is less than NKBA recs of 42" aisles for a one-cook kitchen. Some GWers do have narrower aisles but generally only one aisle is as little as 36" with other aisles wider, which is actually in line with NKBA specs (at least one aisle should be 42"). Additionally, it could be tricky maneuvering the fridge in and out of its cab. If you end up with a standard depth (SD) fridge, an island plan won't work. To give you enough room in front of the fridge, you'd have to shrink the aisle between island and pantry cabs to about 29". Before you decide on a lay-out, I think you really need to determine how much storage you need (esp. how large a pantry) and what type of fridge you will get....See Morehelp, all these decisions with kitchen remodel
Comments (17)I posted the other day about our Ikea dilemma with Ikea's lack of 36 inch uppers. We have 8 ft ceilings as well. After looking at pictures of Ikea kitchens online, I've decided that 40" uppers with only the thin deco strip as a crown will look fine. I liked the way it looked way better than the pics I saw of 30 inch uppers with a soffit. Do a search for yourself and then decide if its such a big deal. Or I like what Jillius suggested about getting the uppers custom made but using Ikea bottoms. I would also like to see your layout. Our kitchen is about 13 x 14 and my IKEA cabinets priced out at 5K, including glass fronts, a corner susan, and 2 tall cabinets, and mostly drawer bases. I think the folks here can be very helpful and having your layout may bring suggestions that could save you from making some costly mistakes. There are a few who come as dictatorial, but the advice is almost always sound. I agree BTW, that your farmhouse sink and appliance choices are leading you out of budegt territory, but only you can decide if that's the right choice for you....See Morekitchen cabinet color decision
Comments (4)IMO that color would toatlly work in your color scheme. I have white high gloss cabinets from Ikea they are 12 yrs old in a kitchen that I run a catering biz from with sometimes 6 people all working in the space . I do not have one scratch or ding and in my last house I have red high gloss from Ikea I loved them too.I actually a few years ago did a kitchen in Miami Beach with high gloss white cabinets to the ceiling and they still look awesome in a house where there are 5 dogs...See Morekl23
