Two Bathtub Master Bath

I am remodeling my master bath to include a wet-room and was playing with the idea of two tubs.

Both would be freestanding, one would be a soaker tub and the other a jetted tub.

Both would have a modern look, complementing each other, however, I do not see this as something anyone has really tried.

Is it overkill?

I have the space and just wondered about having a tub for myself and one for my wife in the new configuration.

Opinions and thoughts (even harsh derisive ones) are welcome.

Is this your “forever home”? If yes, then go for your 2 tubs! Also, is your wife on board with the 2 tubs?

Insane. No is the answer. " You have the space" "We" are not inclined to believe that unless you show us a plan for the bath, FEET AND INCHES ON PAPER WITH ALL THE FIXTURES.

Thats probably harsh, but just because it "fits, does not mean it FITS. Time for show and tell.

Unless you plan to die in the house? NO. Assuming you do plan that? Virtually always, life will intervene, and NOBODY wants two tubs, Is this the Cialis commercial??

Well, phooey. I taped it out in the bathroom with blue tape last night and it looked like it would fit, but with too many nos, I'm back to the drawing board. Interesting thought, Vix. Right now we don't actually have a toilet room, so much as a separate toilet "area" (there's no door, and the closet takes up too much room to add a door), but it's on my agenda to create one. In our house, it's very necessary. I generally use that bathroom to try to FIND privacy, only to have 3 people (and sometimes the dog) follow me into the bathroom. I'm looking forward to having a door that locks and a fan so that I don't have two little people handing me the TP and asking whether I'm doing number 1 or 2 (oh, and the 1 year old likes to flush while I'm ON the pot; so I've got my own special cold water washlet), while DH decides that he absolutely has to shave and brush his teeth at that exact moment. Now if I take a hike to the guest bath on the other side of the house, all three just follow me AGAIN. Sometimes when I have insisted on locking the door in the guest bath (no way to do that with our LOUVERED -- why??? -- pocket door in the master), my one year old plopped down prostrate outside the door and cried until I open the door. For my W/C, I want to put in a LOUD fan; no whisper quiet for me. Maybe I'll even add a radio. :) The way I'm seeing it, I can either get rid of the long vanity altogether and live with a fairly small vanity, plus a tub and shower, I can skip the tub and live with the kids' bathroom on the third level as the only room with a tub, or we can bump out that weird corner jog, which would give us an additional 49'' X 27'' space -- enough to fit a 5X3 tub, 5X3 shower and keep the two vanities. But that sounds very expensive and will require carefully removing and replacing the siding to match the existing. DH's response to all this was "why do we need a tub?"

You should have enough space to have a tub and a shower, depending on the size of vanities, placement of doors, whether you need a toilet enclosure and where the existing plumbing is located. It may be tight, esp. if you want a decent sized shower. Moving the toilet is a PITA. The more plumbing you keep in its original spot, the cheaper it will be. For a quick and dirty (and free) mock up you can use the arrange-a-room tool at BHG. First you specify your room size (unfortunately, their minimum room size is 8 feet by 8 feet, so you'll have to specify a room size of 11 by 8 and ignore one foot of it). Then you pick from among a variety of plumbing fixtures (look in furniture and select bathroom. You'll find toilets, sinks, vanities, corner and regular showers and tubs, etc.). You can also add windows and doors (look in architectural items) You can rotate all of the fixtures, specify sizes, etc. by clicking on info once you drag the fixtures into the room. The program allows you to save, retrieve and print out up to 25 designs. Nothing too sophisticated, but it's easy and it does the trick. Here is a link that might be useful: arrange a room

Nope. It's a good idea to have another bathroom with a tub somewhere, but lots of people, myself included, would take a good sized walk in shower over a tub in the master.

My tub was from 1999 so way worse! Yours does not look bad! I updated 3 years ago to a free standing tub and love it! You will have to replace flooring though since it will show on a free standing tub. You will also have to fix the walls where the tile was. We did a total master bath remodel. My recommendations would be to go to a large bath/kitchen showroom and sit in some tubs to see how you like them! Also to figure out the size you want. Most run very large. I am only 5'2" so didn't want a 7' tub where I would just float around in! Mine is 5 feet I think and its perfect.

In my market most people want no tubs in their master bathroom. Big luxury showers or a steam shower sell better than unused tubs. Two tubs will be a super adequacy.

I am a realtor, I have seen a lot of high end homes, and I have never seen 2 tubs in a primary bath, not even in a 20,000 square foot mansion. I think it would look odd, and would definitely be a turn off for potential buyers. Personally, if I had the space and wanted something really different and a wet room, I’d do a giant tub and a nice sized steam shower, like this.

I hate wet rooms unless you live in the tropics where you are in and out of the pool or ocean all day. @ tubs in any bathroom is just plain ridiculous . Jetted tubs are one of those things you think you want but the novelty wears of quickly according to my clients. I also agree we need a floor plan to scale . In most cases a freestanding tub lookss best in a huge space with lots of space around it .BTW if you mean by wet room something like the pic above please do not do it honestly why would anyone think a tub in the same space as a shower is agood idea.

Jetted tubs ARE soaking tubs. one could do both jobs.

Wet rooms look like showers that will never get hot.

Suggestion: have two bathrooms. one for him and one for her. then, your two tub idea will make more sense and your master bedroom will be truly luxurious.

Call me crazy! but I kinda like the idea.

If you have the room of course! I would put them close to each other. Add a tv and make it a date night. Add a floor wine bucket and a towel warmer near by. Enjoy!

Real life is not an ED commercial. Giant cold waste of space for an aging in place forever home. You might get a dozen uses between the two. For the minimum 50K extra cost.

The space is not that big I may have overestimated now that it is in demo mode it is 24x16 with one end ~12 x10.

@K R - my home is only 13.7K sq ft so I truly appreciate your comment this most,it provide insight on what I can get rid of when I am ready.

@auntthelma - I love your idea a his/her bathroom

I might toy with that one of these days, though it would be great to hear KR chime in on that concept.

My friend has two closeted loos in their master, his and hers. That's the only double feature i would add if I had the space, along with two vanities.

Two tubs is a waste of money and space, and unlikely to add to resale value. Better to use the space for a bigger shower built for two, and/or more storage space.
